How do you ask if someone 'can' do something, as in if something is allowed?

Like, there's a mountain on the horizon that I want to climb next month, but they can be a bit funny about climbing in places so I want to ask if I can climb it, but I don't want it to sound like I'm asking for a critique of my climbing skills, more whether climbing it is allowed?

The best I can come up with is; Boku wa (yama) ni nobomasu desu ka? But I don't know if that will be misinterpreted.

That'll be verb + te form + mo ii.

So nobotte mo ii desu ka? Is "is it okay to climb"
