Each to their own and all that, but I've always thought Radiohead were absolute wank and love how super-series their fans get in any discussion about them. Thom Yorke's voice makes my skin crawl :dread:

Foo Fighter's set was really good from what I saw.

Will be checking out the Run the Jewels, Toots & the Maytals and Major Lazer sets later. I think this year's bill has been pretty poor compared to previous ones, especially in terms of acts towards the top and the headliners.

Yup. Radiohead have spent a career defining what popular music can and should be.

Foo Fighters did a funny video on a plane.

Snob.

Looking forward to BBK later, bet they nail it.

In snob terms, thinking that Radiohead are better than the Foo Fighters is on a par with buying a Chicken Kiev from M&S.

Chicken Kievs from M&S are £7. Clearly top tier snobbery.

It's more the informing people what should be popular juxtaposed with the boiling down of a skilled and extremely popular rock band to a humorous video.

It's like the knobs on the Guardian comments pages every time Oasis are mentioned, thinking it negates the impact of the band because wonderwall only used 3 chords or whatever.

Why is preferring Radiohead to Foo fighters snobbish?

Radiohead devotees will never be separated from the assertion that their band is demonstrably more artistic, worthy, important, influential. It's partly factual, but also heavily influenced by fan-gush. In that way, they're very much like The Beatles.

The fact is, they do nothing for me. Maybe if I forced myself to absorb their music more, some of it would stick and I would come around, but I feel no inclination to do that. When I was at school, there was an older kid who insisted that in two years' time, I'd be as much of a Prince fan as he was. Nope.

But even though I don't particularly like Radiohead, I don't see the need to play them off against bands I do like, in some petty and utterly pointless contest. It's as embarrassing as the console fanboys getting shirty with each other.

So I enjoyed the Foo Fighters show, and didn't watch the Radiohead one.

It was hyperbole used to emphasise a point (I like All my Life and, yes, Learn to Fly amongst others) but I find Foo Fighters to be rote as strawberry float. It's generic rock and roll for the ages, despite having one of the most charismatic front men out there; infinitely listenable but also inoffensive. I saw them in 2007 and they were good. Not great, good.

Radiohead have genuinely shaped the popular rock landscape for almost the entirety of their career. Everyone should be able to see this. Every album, love it or hate it, has been a reinvention of their sound and at the top of their game this often trickles down to all aspects of the genre, and other genres besides. I dislike the music of Led Zepplin but I recognise how fundamental they were to the current music scene. Same is true of Radiohead. Except I like them.
