Pointless when you can just upgrade your own PS3 at will.

Though - pointless is Sony's forte.

Argh.

Do I cancel me 80GB pre-order and wait?

 @ Sony

Why and I know this has been said before can't they just do one version and be done with it instead of faffing about with multiple sku's it just beggars belief.

It is a bit stupid yeah. I mean you can understand Microsoft having multiple hard drive sizes as they have proprietory drives which only work with their machine whereas it doesn't even void the warranty to replace a PS3 HDD and by all accounts its fairly cheap and easy to do so.

Maybe BC will come back now that PS3 software is beginning to shift in decent numbers. It was only ever taken away in order to help bolster PS3 software sales as the lack of decent software saw many users treating their PS3 as a very expensive Ps2 a lot of the time. When you are playing God of War on your PS2 you are not playing Lair and Ratchet etc.

There really are no technical or cost-efficiency implications to it at all: it is all down to when Sony thinks the time is right to reintroduce it.

Personally I think the more likely scenario is for them to sell PS2 games on the store for download. It wouldn't be a popular decision with those who have a big library of PS2 games but I wouldn't put it past them.

Wow, looks like that money I spent on the 60GB wasn't such a waste after all.

:fp: That is mental :fp:

Love that facepalm.

The simple fact that you can whack a big old generic hard drive into a PS3 makes bigger storage utterly redundant.

Your comments are pretty feasible mate, but the timing doesn't make sense. They don't really have the infrastructure in place to deliver the Ps2 catalogue in online form.

I know. It baffles me why they do this. You can get 250gb and an 80gb machine for about £370 so the need for a 160gb HDD baffles me. Sony need to listen to the fans and add in full BC. Not even all the PSone games work.

I haven't come across one yet. Which can't be said of PS2 titles, which are practically all faulty in some way bar Tomb Raider Anniversary.

Final Fantasy VIII is the main game.

To be honest I wouldn't miss the BC in the 60GB model. It's simply a broken, poorly implemented feature.

PSone BC is in all systems, anyway.

But not 100% though so again. The best solution is a Slimline PS2 and PS3. Which costs a fair bit combined.

The good thing about the PS3 though, especially with PSone titles, is it makes them look reasonable on a HD screen. Without that upscaling it's a blurred mess.

Tis true but still it's not 100% so again they should shelve it until they 100% BC with all their home consoles.

Most people with PS2 games to play will already own a PS2 anyway. I've never really seen the big deal with BC. I don't own a PS3, but if I do ever buy one the fact that I'd have to keep hold of my PS2 wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Why are people being so short sighted when it comes to SKU's with bigger HD's?

As I see it both Microsoft and Sony believe downloadable content is the future, not restricted to games (which are getting bigger) or music files but also video services. That kind of content delivery will need a huge amount of space. In addition to that Sony will be launching PlayTV to record TV directly to the HDD.

To have these features you need more space, right? People who just want to play games can buy the 60GB/80GB version of each platform and the people who wish to migrate media over to a single box they can buy the 120GB/160GB of the very same platforms.

It's planning for the future.
