Not my opinion - in fact I'm so out of tune with modern gaming that there are some people's top tens in the "GRcade years" thread running at the moment wherein I've not played a single game - but that of contemporary publications, websites, and listmakers.

This list article shows 2014 to be the first year since 1983 without a game released that is considered to be among the greatest games ever.

Is that true? (Here's another Wikipedia article that might help) I don't post this to bait or provoke; looking at the list of games that won awards that year, the only one I've played is Monument Valley, so I really, genuinely don't know whether this (the thread title) would be a fair comment. But I was really surprised to see that there was a gap on that first list.

I would have said around 2012. I can’t remember the exact year but it was around that area when we had motion control minigames everywhere and not much else

Yeah the generation got off to a really poor start, Destiny and Titanfall were both hyped and ended up being disappointing.

Nintendo had a good year with Bayonetta 2 and Mario Kart 8.

Everything else was a remaster.

That was probably year when Dragon Age: Inquisition and Shadow of Mordor were winning GOTY awards left, right and centre

Yeah, no! I've ultimately spent 564 hours (mental I know  ) on Destiny and I know 100+ of those hours was in the first year. Divinity: Original Sin and Wolfenstein: The New Order are GREAT games too, and I enjoyed the Hell out of Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor.

My most played game ever came out in 2014 and yet myself and many others are looking forward to never having to play it ever again come December.

Trials Fusion was released in 2014.

Any year with a Trials game cannot be the worst year for gaming.

Fusion wasn't as good as Evolution though.

I would not really know myself being in a somewhat similar boat as you, but I would have thought Bayo 2 would be considered among the greats. Prefer the DMC games, but Bayo was still excellent in its own way and apparently Bayo 2 was even better.

Wait, Smash Wii U? That's your most played game? Not hating, just surprised.

True, but it's still Trials and therefore elevates 2014 above non-Trials years.

I remember 2014 being quite a dull year in terms of games I was interested in. It was the first proper year for the new consoles as well, we were seeing cross gen releases during this period.

You're the first person I've ever seen who says Bayonetta 2 is better than 1. If anything people have a lot of complaints about Bayo 2 such as it being too easy with the difficulty coming from enemies being able to parry moves at random or being able to instantly kill you, in other-words artificial difficulty. Bayo 1 had those stupid QTE's that were a staple at the time but otherwise the consensuses seems to be that Kamiya made a much deeper game.

Not really surprising when it has what is probably the most active player community of any offline game in the UK and Japan (when I lived there). Doing an international exchange and a masters made me too busy to play more than 1 game so I picked the most active, Melee isn't a very active game in UK or Japan so I stopped playing.

Actually, Destiny made it peak gaming for me personally. While it's not an all-time classic game, I had a good group of friends playing it regularly, and the shift to PvE really suited me. The lives of the individuals have changed and we rarely play together now. Makes me sad.

DriveClub was also released in 2014. I enjoyed both of these a lot and are both in my top 10 of the last 10 years.

True enough - it's one of gaming's great shames that it had so many early issues and therefore never got the acclaim it deserved. I still have unfinished business with it and do intend to go back to it eventually.

Just looked at s list of games from 2014 and my highlights were, Watchdogs, Wolfenstain, Forza Horizon 2, Disney Infinity, Mario Kart 8, Titanfall, Assassins Creed Unity, Child of Light, Valiant Hearts, Never Alone plus others so not really that bad of a year

I said 'apparently Bayo 2 was even better'. I haven't played it myself. I have pretty much just seen people say Bayo 2 is better but I'm not active in that kind of community, and I'm not too active in discussions about current games, so I'll believe you if you say that's the consensus.

As to Smash Wii U I mean I guess that could be true, not really thought about it. I was just talking about you though lol. Thought you had gone off the game a bit, but those reasons make sense.

Makes some sense with it being the first year of the PS4 and XBONE, which were slow to start with plenty of cross-gen releases. GTAV also cast a long shadow it seems.
