SKSP - 24 Hour Charity Gaming Marathon - Challenge: Accepted

I don't know if this a being cheeky or not so please feel free to lock up if I'm breaking any rules but I thought I'd draw your attention to an event that I'm taking part in during the 7-9th October.

Sick Kids Save Point is a 24 hour gaming marathon that's been set up to help raise funds for the Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Sick Children and is open to gamers everywhere.

As some of you may know, my 18 month old son was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He was rushed to the Sick Kids on Monday afternoon after being diagnosed earlier that day. He ended up having to spend five nights there (2 of which were in their High Dependency Unit) whilst the Doctors stabilised his condition to a point where he was well enough to go home and receive treatment there.

After all the help he'd received, I felt it only right that I try and give something back, and what better way to do it than this?!

The event was first run last year and managed to raise £7,000 (with support from Rockstar North, who are based in Edinburgh), they're hoping to raise even more this year.

This is the first time I've seen any kind of gaming charity event being organised. Have any of you guys taken part in something similar? Or do you have any other fund raising stories to share?

My friends and I organised one of these to raise money when we were at school. I think you paid money to take part as opposed to the sponsorship thing, and we got to use the projector in the hall, which was awesome

There's normally a few Rock Band 24 hour marathons each year.

Wow, that would have been awesome. I think I'll be doing most of my playing on my 24" LCD monitor. Seems almost rubbish in comparison

Jesus, I can barely play those sorts of games anyway, never mind for 24 hours! That must take some effort. And, thanks!

I thought I'd post some of the details from the site to give you an idea of the sort of things the money raised would be going towards:

What is all this for?
Sick Kids Save Point is a 24 hour gaming marathon being held 7th-9th October 2011 to raise money for The Sick Kids Friends Foundation.
The foundation supports the work of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. The Hospital receives over 100,000 children through its doors each year from all over the country.

* Extra comforts, which make time in hospital better for children
* Facilities
* Extra medical equipment
* Support for sick children who are cared for in the Community
* Funding for extra training and research

Last year, although we did contribute towards purchasing vital equipment for complicated surgery we didn't quite make it to our £10,000 pound 'platinum' target. visit our trophy list,

this year help us push to that next level.

If you don't want to take part, you can sponsor us here! Please give what you can to support us... We're going to push through the fun barrier.

The organisers recommend having some sort of schedule set up before hand so I'm going to have a think about that too. Where to begin?

I need to do the 24 hr Race on GT5

I didn't realise there was such a thing! How does that work? Can you save etc or do you do it in one block?

I think I'm going to try and do a few games over my 24 hours, sticking at one for the whole time would end me!

My games collection could have a few additions come October but I'm currently thinking about:

Starting Fallout: New Vegas
Finishing LA Noire (if I haven't done so already) and
dying loads in Dark Souls

I'll avoid 3DS/PSP games as I tend to end up playing them about an inch from my face, which wouldn't really help over a prolonged period.

It's the Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance (GT5 A-Spec) Looks like you have to do it all at once.

I'd try to complete Ocarina of Time.

Shouldnt be to hard, some people do starcraft 24hour live streams. And thats just for silly youtube people, not a charity.

Now that would be something. I remember doing something similar when it first came out on the N64. Boxing Day that year was lost to me, I got up first thing to play it and then wondered where the day had gone. Fun times.

Hmm, I think playing one game for that long would be extremely hard. I've never seen any of these live streams but, having dipped my toe in the ocean that is Starcraft 2, I know that it takes a certain type of person to swim there, of which I am not.

EDIT: I reckon I could quite happily play WoW for a good chunk of it though!

I could at it to my list, maybe setting myself a challenge of trying to finish the single player campaign.

Actually, if you like...the forum could set you up some challengers and challenges throughout the day and make it a bit of an event on GRcade? Christ, we're a games forum at the core so let's embrace it.

Now, that....that is an excellent idea. I was going to post while I was doing it anyway so yeah, why not? And multi-player stuff with some of the peeps on here would be ace, might make it feel less like it's just me stuck in a room with a load of consoles

I think maybe having something in place beforehand would be good (just to make sure I have the games there) and the challenges would have to be manageable (there are achievements and then there are Achievements) but I think it'd be a really good way of getting folk involved and garnering interest...and hopefully raising some cash for a very good cause at the same time too.

You should do a game that you won't find entertaining in the least. Something like Desert Bus, or a collection of comically bad games, like Garbage Truck Simulator 2011.

Yes! Another good idea, thanks. It might stop some of the "That'll be easy, lolz!" type comments I've been getting at work about it too.

I'm saving pennies for a rapidly approaching holiday at the mo so later in the year is ideal.
