Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is being remade for a new generation of players.

That’s according to highly reliable leaker and dataminer billbil-kun, who claims that a remake of the celebrated co-op title is set to be announced soon.

It’s reportedly set to be published by 505 Games and could conceivably be revealed at the Game Awards on Thursday night.

Brothers was written and directed by Swedish-Lebanese filmmaker Josef Fares, who developed what his first game in collaboration with Starbreeze, and would later go on to found It Takes Two studio Hazelight.

The fantasy adventure sees players controlling two brothers at once as they set out on a journey to find a cure to save their dying father.

It was first released in 2013 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, before making its way to PS4, Xbox One, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Nintendo Switch and Amazon Luna over the following seven years.

Brothers won several notable awards including the prize for Best Innovation at the 2014 BAFTA Video Game Awards.

In 2015 Starbreeze said the title would be “best nurtured under a new owner” and sold the rights for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons to its publisher 505 Games.

Ian Howe, then president of 505 Games, said at the time: “Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a remarkable game, one of the most affecting games of the last generation and one of which 505 Games has been very proud to be associated.”

I played this originally on either PS3 or 360 up until just before THE SPIDER, so I still don't know how this one ends. Probably death, because that's how it usually goes. I can't remember what I got distracted by, maybe GTA V.

Willing to buy it again?

Not at all necessary. It has an art style that really doesn't require a remake. Sounds like they just want a quick buck.

They already did a XB1/PS4 version. What is the point? If people want to play it, they already can.

It’s not even that good. Very basic puzzling, and a schmaltzy story.

I'd rather have a remake/sequel to this game about brothers.

I'd also apply that critique to It Takes Two. I'd probably be harsher actually. I think Brothers is fairly decent but I don't understand the level of praise Josef Fares seems to receive, just seems completely disproportionate with his output.

Yeah, this feels really unnecessary, a sequel would have been better

I thought it was a beautiful game, but I'm not a fan of remakes at the best of times. This feels utterly unnecessary.

A sequel where he digs up all his family and reanimates them? I’d be up for that.

Brothers came out in 2013. It was only in the Switch port in 2019 when co-op got added. Definitely not a co-op title!

It is a good game though, I enjoyed playing it (on Switch... in singleplayer). Don't see any need for a remake but if it is actually remade as a co-op only title akin to A Way Out/It Takes Two, I could be interested.

You are right, it didn't have co-op until the Switch. I always thought it did!

I liked it a lot.

Great game doesn't strike me as especially needing a sequel in honesty.

Co-op is the way to play it though! I played this my brother and it was one of my most memorable gaming experiences. I don't get to play that many fairly lengthy two player co-op but it's special when I do. I would love to be able to play the it takes two or the prison one.

I infer the makers were a bit precious initially about this not being a two player. I think definitely the better experience being a two player only except the swimming bit at the end

I'm sure it's fun in co-op (and an interesting experience to play with your actual brother!) but I also imagine it must be a lot more simplistic. The twin stick control of two characters at the same time is a key mechanic to the game in singleplayer and an unusual gimmick that helps set it apart.

It absolutely is a single player game and is in no need of a remake.

Make a sequel instead. The current version looks and plays just as well as it did when it came out.
