The Story
Moira McKinnon has never seen the sea.

For fifteen years she’s lived with her mum in a small house on the edge of the Scottish Highlands—then one day she receives a letter from her Uncle Hamish urging her to come to the coast. If she can reach his lighthouse in time, a wonderful surprise will be waiting...

And so, Moira runs away.

The hills are full of secrets and stories, but what you find will depend on where you go. The narrative is not branching but weaving; a mesh of history, mythology and family secrets. What truths will you discover?

Image

Moira McKinnon is running away.
To reach the sea, Moira must first cross the Scottish Highlands—a wilderness of paths, peaks, shortcuts, dangers, and song

Image

Platforming
Climb peaks to orient yourself and plan your next steps. Spelunk caves, scale cliffs, jump from rock to rock and slide down scree slopes as you make your way forward.

Image

Survival
Wind, rain and cold are your enemies. Moira is no superhero, and the Highlands are not to be underestimated. Shelter to survive.

Image

Navigation
Learn the stories and the secrets of the hills, which are filled with lost things, echoes, and memories.

Image

Rhythm runs
Skip and jump through the valleys to the incredible music of TALISK and Fourth Moon. The landscape itself forms itself around the shape of the music.

Image

Replay
Get ready to make the journey more than once, because a single trip isn't nearly enough to discover the Highlands' deepest secrets.

Image

The World
In the Highlands, every peak has a story to tell and every valley echoes with song. Giants sleep, ghosts sing, crows carry messages, and eagles lift the dead.

But the Highlands’ crags are unforgiving and its summits are cold—Moira’s trek will not be easy.

Can you help her find a way across this winding wilderness in time?

Anyone picking this up next week? Edge reviewed it this month and gave it a 9 out of 10 so could be something special.

Looks lovely, no time to play it at the moment though.

£15 on the eShop - £13.49 (pre-order discount?) until the 11th.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Why? It seems very deferential of its setting, at least one of the lead devs lives in and enjoys actual hiking in Scotland, and its music is by a Scottish folk group.

I on the other hand couldn't give two hoots (mon) about her name. Looks great so I'll probably pick it up on PC at some point.

What's wrong with the Highlands?

Let's just hope it's a genuine celebration of Scottish folklore and culture rather than some lurid Scotploitation tale of bonny wee tam-o-shanters and tartan undergarments.

Maybe the 'magic' that uncle Hamish has waiting for her is a bottle of Buckfast Tonic Wine* and she goes on to be a street walker in Aberdeen, but I think they'll mostly be concentrating on the folklore and narrative stuff.

*The name "Tonic Wine" does not imply any medicinal or health giving properties.

that'd make a nice change from the way our folklore usually is. just for once though i wish they'd actually make the characters rude

Well I think this looks great and very up my street and an evocation of the kind of rugged mountain journeydom/celebration as found in something like MacFarlane's beloved The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd!

Don't kill me shyguy

Seconded!

Also more thoughts: I hope the game doesn't get too twee but let's see. Also I quite that actually it looks kind of rough and borderline craft-naff (if you get me?) in an appealing collage-y way that almost reminds me of old Samorost.

Also I'm tempted to just pre-order this for some reason. And I think that reason is MovementMountainsMusic

EDIT: I think I'm Less keen after watching the trailer! Earnest talking eek! Still quite keen though so...

Nan Shepherd - great reference.

Think I’ll pick this up the day it comes out.

Review of this up on The Guardian - 4/5.

Ditto Eurogamer.

Nintendolife 7/10.

After scanning the reviews I’m not so sure about this now.

Same here, watched a couple of reviews this morning and while I still love the art style, I'm not sure about a couple of the other bits really.
