What's the deal with that? I've been itching to play this again - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Viva-Pi%C3%B1ata-PC/dp/B000VWQWHC

Will I still be able to play after the cut off point? or what?

I assume you can play it even after GFWL has cut off, you just won't be able to 'trade' with other players or gain any achievements as well access to your profile saves (but then you can move em to 'Guest' account I think).

So I assume it will be alright in long run.

I have Blazblue on disc which uses GFWL and I can still play that even when i;m not connected to the internet so I think some games will still work when GFWL does get shut down.

It depends entirely on how integrated the game is with GFWL.

Basically, launch the game, don't sign into GFWL and see what parts of the game you can still access.

http://www.polygon.com/2014/6/22/5831680/games-for-windows-live-shutting-down-microsoft

Microsoft, in the land where things mean the opposite of what they do here, wrote:Microsoft has formally denied it will deactivate its Games for Windows Live service for PC at the beginning of July, as had been rumored since August of last year and anticipated as developers — including a studio owned by Microsoft — stopped using it.

In a statement to Game Informer, Microsoft said "We are continuing to support the Games for Widows Live service," and "We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future."

"Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual," the company said to Game Informer.

That's the most bizarre attempt at spin I've ever read.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Gil from the Simpsons serves as an avatar of many elements of the games industry, especially in this case.

Absolutely typical of Microsoft's recent form, though.

Say X, mean Y, we all know that Z is the truth.
