So my hopeless love-affair with all things FFXIII continues. A while ago I purchased a strategy guide for FFXIII-2. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but when it arrived it was a beautiful sealed hardcover collector's edition (the one with the padded covers and foiled titles). This thing had never been opened. I was spell-bound. The thing is, it wasn't expensive. I paid £9.00 for it.

But the bug had struck. You know the one. I had to have the same collector's hardcover editions for FFXIII and Lightning Returns. I had to, don't you see? :fp:

So last week, against my better judgment, I surfed Amazon. Yep. I found 'em.

FFXIII collector's special edition strategy guide (hardcover, new): £48.00
Lightning Returns collector's special edition strategy guide (hardcover, new): £29.00

By the time I'd paid postage, it all came out to just over £80.00. :shifty:

I have no excuse. It was completely illogical and there is no justification for such madness - except to say the FFXIII book arrived today. It's beautiful.

So what's your most indefensible gaming-related purchase (to date)? Can anyone do better than my idiocy?

I bought the version of Gears of War 2 that came with a full scale replica gold Lancer rifle which was of really poor build quality and in no way worth the asking price of around £70 if memory serves.

I spent ONE HUNDRED POUNDS on this pile of shite:

Oh, god, Cal. Indefensible gaming purchases? That's most of my gaming purchases!

Will have a think about the best (worst) example and pop back in a bit.

I suppose the amount I spent on Steel Battalion, versus the amount of time spent using it, plus the fact that the controller is always in the bloody way in the cupboard it's in.

But I still don't regret it.

I don't have a problem, you have a problem!

Outside of FFXIV, I also have the Dark Souls 3 Red Knight statue and artbook, the Bravely Second artbook/Agnes figure, a Samus figure, a Persona figure, a bunch of collector's edition strategy guides, etc. I'd have more useless crap but I'm waiting for this contract period to pass on my flat so I can move to a bigger place before sorting it out.

Back in the day, i bought an imported Dreamcast controller purely because it had a red swirly logo as opposed to a blue swirly logo.

Looks okay in that pic. I take it it's not so hot in the flesh?

(Borderlands 2 is a great game though).

Definitely The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I have ten copies of the game. N64 PAL cart x3, N64 JPN cart x1, 3DS cart x3, 3DS download x1 and Wii download x2. I guess it is a bit odd, really.

But, hey, if you'd like to check out pics of some of them, please enjoy purusing my post in the Retro Weekender thread.

Oh, and I love your FF XIV gear, MET!

Tbh, those figurines look magnificent. It's not something I've been into collecting (probably a good thing for my bank balance), but it is something I can always appreciate - and I enjoy watching Collector Edition unboxings on YT for that reason.

One thing I didn't mention in my opening post was that I made a point of buying alternative editions of those FFXIII strategy guides in paperback versions, too - you know; so I don't have to risk damaging the hardback collector editions by actually using them. :fp: It's one lunacy upon another, all the way down... :slol:

Jawa, I took a look at those pics. To think, somewhere long ago, I actually had a boxed copy of that original N64 game... ah, all lost now. I can't even remember what became of it. Also, I love that you keep some games sealed. It's madness, isn't it? And yet somehow it makes perfect sense. I think you have to be a gamer to really appreciate ironies like that.

Nice collection. :)

However, i have something you don't, and that's a official shop display poster, i got mine after asking the staff at Woolworths if i could have it once they'd finished with it, and they said yes.

It's in one of my many poster tubes somewhere and i don't have time to go and get it out, so here's a pic i found on google image search...

Mine has some very slight water damage on the bottom corner due to it being used on one of those A frame shop signs outside the store, but apart from that it should still be almost mint.

I also have a boxed copy of the game, the N64 special edition mag (same as yours), and i did have the Nintendo Magazine review issue at one time but i'm not sure if i have that now.

Haven't bought anything gaming tat related since the old Halo 3 cat helmet. Frankly I don't really have the space to put any of that crap these days anyway.

I had that too, I finally got rid of it when I had a big clear out about 2 years ago... I think I just about broke even on it.

Rock Band: Band in a box edition (or whatever it was called) was another pretty extravagant purchase for me. When you consider I used the mic and drums barey a handful of times it was also a complete waste of money. I think the drumkit is still kicking about at my parents house somewhere.

Wow, really? I'd assumed it was worth like a quid or something. Might have to dig it out of the attic.

I'm definitley not normally a "sealed" collector, Cal - I was just fortunate in that situation to be able to keep it sealed. I enjoy opening up the boxes and looking at the manuals and leaflets inside :-).

Nice going, Vermilion - that's an unusal item to have!

I have never really been one for "collectors editions" either, mhtl, as - especially nowdays - I find that they tend to contain a lot of junk and be pretty expensive. Storage space can indeed become a challenge!

Right now CeX will give you about £40 for it so the price has dropped since I sold mine.
