PostMicrosoft to stop used games on next box?
by Christopher » Wed Feb 06, 2013 12:27 pm

New news new thread
Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.

Sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console have told us that although the next Xbox will be absolutely committed to online functionality, games will still be made available to purchase in physical form. Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

Our source has also confirmed that the next Xbox’s recently rumoured specs are entirely accurate. That means an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. As of now, the console’s hard drive capacity is said to be undecided, but Microsoft’s extended commitment to online delivery suggests that it will be the largest unit it has put inside a console to date.

Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces, and a new, more reliably responsive Kinect will also ship alongside the next Xbox. Sony’s next-generation console camera system is said to have a similar set of features, and is expected to be discussed at the company’s PlayStation event on February 20.

A console that's got to be always online? This has to be a joke surely?

The odd game, fair enough, but the entire console? :dread:

This does not sound true. It had better not be, anyway.

From a dev point of view, this is also rather interesting:

Makes sense if it is quite OS / multi-tasking focused, but still somewhat surprising considering that is usually the main benefit of a console over a traditional PC.

Now this stuff is worrying. If Microsoft go ahead with Steam like sales then maybe it can be justified as we won't be paying silly money for games we have no use for after finishing with them. Wasn't there rumours of Sony also stopping used games for their next console?

I buy most of my games on PC, digitally, online, for about £20. This has completely change how I buy games.

I used to just wait for ages until console prices came down until £20.

So I'm not really opposed to this provided the games are cheap enough while new, which on the whole I don't see happening and is just another reason to not buy a console.

This is BS, no doubt. Always connected console and used games! Tall about alienating a significant number the user base in what is still a ropey economy!

PS4 intrigues me, having never owned a ps. If this us true, decision all but made!

Good luck with that

Sony's PlayStation division has patented technology that can block the use of second hand games on a console.

The idea sees individual game discs matched to user accounts. Games which have been associated with another user's account will be rejected.

Discs would come branded with a contactless tag which would be recognised and read by your console, using the same sort of NFC technology present in modern bank cards.

Also is it true that the Vita blocks tropheys on used games? :|

Fine by me, never buy 2nd hand. Just wait for it to drop in price new. I find 2nd hand game prices insane. Anyway this bs rumour was about before the PS3 arrived! Look how that turned out.

Even ignoring the 2nd hand games argument, this would be ridiculous if it only allows one user to activate the game. The 360 was bad enough with the way it forced every user on a single console to individually pay for online, but to make them all buy the same game is a whole other level of wrong.

strawberry float that gooseberry fool right off.

If they're going to kill the 2nd hand market, they strawberry floating better reduce the price by at least a third to make up for it!
How can they be allowed to do this in the EU anyway, when they demand Steam let users sell their digitally bought games on the 2nd hand market?

This is bullshit story anyway. I would believe this until they confirm it themselves.

Imagine your internet is down for hours and you can't play your machine. It is bullshit.

Surely that doesn't rule out 2nd hand game sales? All it means it that they'll charge you a season/online pass for it. There is no way they'll kill the 2nd hand market, they just want their cut of it.

Nah I think you can wipe it if you get a pre-owned Vita game to get the trophies.

I don't think I've ever bought a 2nd hand game in my life but it will be a shame to not sell the game on when you're entirely done with it if it's true.

I also like the source of the information. A person close to the development. Cool.

EDIT: Also, why are people like Brer complaining? Do you get a lot of resale value on all those PC games that you buy? Or even the 2nd hand ones that you like to pick up?
