Aaron and friends build PCs (help) - Build underway!

There are loads of units or items that can be compared against to give an indication of where performance might land. But the new 4000 cards have fewer cuda cores but they are clocked higher. Nothing really compares to actual games.

Digital foundry do this. They reckon the xsx and PS5 are 2070super territory. But this only really applies for multiplatform. 1st party stuff is very well optimised for set consoles.

Speaking of, my GPU ended up never shipping from Amazon so after some shenanigans with customer service I've ended up ordering the 12gb 3080 which should be here by next week. Looking forward to getting the build together, if a little nervous!

If you're nervous, I'd go by the 'no stupid questions' rule on here. I've already asked Kerr one about graphics cards, which means I feel a bit more equipped as to what to look for.

One day, we'll all be playing Crysis 7 together on our new machines. Or else all complaining on here about why we can't get minesweeper to work. It's currently about 50-50.

Good news everyone! The parts are all here!

The keen eyed among you may notice that I'm rocking a 3080Ti now. After the annoyance of Amazon just not shipping the 10GB 3080 and forcing me to get the 12gb, they've obviously decided to make up for the bad customer service I received around that by upgrading me to the 3080Ti for free and without saying anything. How nice of them.

So after a quick panic to make sure this slightly unexpected card still works with my system, I'm moderately happy with that! Here's the final list of what I'm packing:

Now onto the very daunting build process. Any last tips or recommended guides for me? First step will be flashing the BIOS of the motherboard using a USB stick to make it compatible with 13th gen CPUs.

I don't think I'll stream myself building it but I may live post my progress on the GRcade discord, and this may be tomorrow as it's the most time I'll have for a while.

Sick specs Aaron, very cool! You'll do great at the build - just go slowly and methodically. It really does all just fit together like Lego. If you find two bits don't go together quite like you're expecting, don't force it, just check YouTube or Reddit for "whatever plug in to whatever-else" and you'll find how to get past it.

Think how well your anime visual novels will run on it once it's built!

Ooh quick question:

I have a nice big space with a big table where I can out this together. Problem is it is a carpeted room (and away from where it will finally be stationed). How much do I need to worry about static frying my nice new stuff?

Take your shoes and socks off to reduce the friction from walking on carpet (or stand on an insulating material like cardboard or polystyrene) and always touch something metal like a radiator to discharge any static before handling the components.`

If it helps, an antistatic wrist strap is only about £5 and then you definitely wouldn't have to worry about it.

Static isn’t a major deal. Advice above is good to ground yourself, touch a radiator, case metal etc.

Alright will get underway in a couple of hours.

Last question - what's your preference around putting the motherboard in the case first then adding the components to the mounted motherboard, or add the components to the motherboard outside the case, then add them all in together?

I will eyeball my stuff and get a feel for the best way for me, just interested in your thoughts.

Gonna get a coffee, watch another video then get underway by trying to flash my bios as the first step.

I've always added the CPU, CPU cooler and RAM to the motherboard before placing the whole lot in the case as it's easier to work on it that way. I've put the GPU in once the motherboard is in the case.

Yeah. If you need to do bios do that outside the case. Put the cpu in, ram in, nvme, need to be careful with cpu cooler. It can be done outside the case as it’s air. But you’ll need to access the screw holes for the mobo mounting.

Bios has been flashed, thanks for the helpful advice on how to do that Bertie, that vid you posted was very helpful.

Now just setting up my build area.

Spent the past 20 minutes trying to remove the ATX Power cable from the motherboard so I can start the build.

This is very stressful, it won't budge and I'm scared about breaking the motherboard

Okay finally got it.

Not feeling great about the fact it's taken me 30 minutes to pull out one cable and I'm already stressed and sweaty and haven't even started the build
