This is where I've been going wrong all these years....

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-46393501

Southwest Airlines has apologised after a member of its staff mocked a five-year-old girl's name.

Traci Redford and her daughter, Abcde (pronounced ab-si-dee), were en route home to El Paso, Texas, from California's John Wayne Airport when the incident occurred.

A gate agent allegedly began laughing and took a photo of the child's boarding pass and posted it online.

Airline spokesperson Chris Mainz offered the family a "sincere apology".

Do we judge people by their name?

In a statement to Buzzfeed News, Mr Mainz said the employee's social media post "is not indicative of the care, respect, and civility" the airline expects.

"We take great pride in extending our Southwest hospitality to all of our customers," the statement reads.

Ms Redford told broadcaster ABC7 that the airline "hadn't done anything" for two weeks after she had filed a formal complaint.

Ms Redford said the gate agent "started laughing, pointing at me and my daughter, talking to other employees", and her daughter had asked her why they were mocking her.

"She said: 'Mom, why is she laughing at my name?' And I said not everyone is nice and not everyone is going to be nice and it's unfortunate," Ms Redford said.

Vocativ, a news and data website, published a piece in 2014 saying there were at that time 328 children in the US named "Abcde", according to the Social Security Administration.

It's a stupid name, but the airline staff shouldn't mock and laugh in the face of a 5 year old.

True, but she might as well get used to it.

My girlfriend is Portuguese, where they have fairly restrictive laws about naming children. When she first told me about it, I was not on board at all - thought it seemed archaic and jingoistic.

However, there is something to be said for protecting children from their strawberry floating idiot parents. And also it regulates varieties on how to spell basic names. The idea that a name should be unique is so dumb to me.

This basically.

My wife is a teacher and has come across plenty of kids with really bizarre names over the years, there does seem to be a growing trend for "unique" and "quirky" naming of offspring these days. Obsidian was a recent one. And there was a kid a few years back who was called Chloe but her parents either didn't understand how it was pronounced or were just trying to be odd as they pronounced it as ch-low.

Another thing becoming common these days is for a theme to run through the naming of siblings - similar to the who Kardashians all starting with K nonsense, lots of parents seem to be going for either similar sounding names or names from a related topic - flowers (Rose, Violet, Lily etc.), musical (Melody, Harmony etc.). There was one family at a previous school with three kids - Harvey, Harrison and Harriet. I like the letter H as much as the next person but wouldn't you prefer a bit more variety?

I am free to think Abcde is a stupid name, but I would never dream of telling the parents or children that. It’s none of my business.

And it certainly isn’t any of the governments business what kids are allowed to be called (within reason) or what variations on the spelling of names is allowed.

Yeah. The parents must be pricks to choose that name.

Parents who have named their baby boy Griezmann Mbappe after France's two World Cup winners could be stopped from doing so by French officials.

The baby was born in Brive in southern France, where the matter has been referred to the public prosecutor, the mayor's office confirmed to BBC Sport.

Laws in France mean authorities can refuse names if they are "contrary to the interest of the child".

Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe starred as France triumphed in Russia.

Atletico Madrid forward Griezmann, 27, and 19-year-old Paris St-Germain striker Mbappe - who joined the French champions for £165.7m - both scored four goals at this summer's tournament.

The birth of the baby earlier this month was first reported by regional newspaper La Montagne.

The paper reports that if a judge orders a name change it will be deleted from the register and then parents will be asked to choose another name.

In 2015, a French court prevented a couple from naming their baby girl Nutella after the hazelnut spread, ruling that it would make her a laughing stock. The judge ordered that the child be called Ella instead.

The government should have some ability to intervene in situations where the naming of a child is going to cause issues, I guess the challenge comes down to deciding on what are the acceptable boundaries.

Obviously naming your child something ridiculous like "Fuckface" or "IHateWhites" seems like a reasonable thing to be blocked, but there are plenty of situations where more nuance may be required.

What if the parents' culture and heritage may lead them to desire a name which is perfectly normal and reasonable to them but happens to be offensive in the place they now find themselves? Should they be prevented from using that name?

Yeah. I don’t think it is the governments place to regulate names unless they are obviously offensive.

“Abcde” is a stupid name but it is nobody else’s business. “Adolf Smith” would be stupid but just about allowable. “Adolf Kill All Jews Hitler Smith” is going too far.

Nah it's not a name associated with larger drinkers or scwun fans, it's more what you call your kid after getting addicted to a certain green spirit.

It's pronounced Absinthee.

Its a ridiculous name but it isn't right to mock the child.

The parents however deserve to be called out on their idiocy.

Although to be fair, Abcde is a much more sensible name than Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii.
