Using Safari? Seems to have gone away now and Android Chrome seems fine too. Weird.

I've had the dreaded "You can only watch three more videos, Please stop using adblock" message. There's only one issue. I'M NOT USING AN ADBLOCKER. I'M REGULARLY SEEING ADS. I can't strawberry floating disable something I'm not using. Seriously, between the massively intrusive ads and the fact that Google/Youtube are asking me to stop using something I'm not using, I'm ready to call it a day on that platform. Hell, I won't have a choice because Google is going to stop me from using Youtube as punishment for something I'm not even doing.

Do you have any other kind of extensions installed in your browser? I wouldn't be surprised if the scripts they're using to detect Ad-Blockers are flagging up other extensions with false positives.

Only Mendeley Web Importer. I'm now banned from watching YouTube videos. I did click on one of the ad videos that was on the front page, that played fine. So I can watch YouTube as long as all I want to watch are the ad videos  :fp:

Only for as long as Youtube (erroneously or otherwise) detects that you're using an ad blocker. I was blocked from Youtube for using an ad blockers, but as soon as I updated uBlock Origin with more recent filters it started working again (this has happened a few times in the last few weeks; Youtube detects an ad blocker, a few hours later uBlock's filters have been updated to get me past that detection).
Have you tried disabling the Mendeley Web Importer?

yes this is hilarious that people who dont use adblockers may now be forced to use adblockers to get around the adblocker ban  :fp:

I tried disabling Mendeley but that didn't work. What does work is clicking on "Allow YouTube Ads" then "Refresh Page". I have to do it for every single video but it's a work around. This whole thing is so dumb

Yeah, I'm going to go with uBlock. My last update before I do

Google now can't seem to decide if I have adblock or not. Sometimes I get the message, sometimes it plays videos without the warning. When it does this it plays ads at the start of the video. Or more accurately it plays about 5 seconds of an ad before cutting away to the video, apparently not even Google wants me to see ads

This feels like the thread for The Problem With YouTube These Days.

Hbomberguy's first video in a year is about flagrant plagiarism within YouTube video essayists and touches on many things, including the obvious content mill that much of YouTube has become.

Not nearly as fun as the Tommy Tallarico rabbit hole from last year but interesting and typically informative nonetheless.

It is close to four hours long, naturally, so don't watch it if you don't wish to!

I've noticed a real dip in the quality of my suggested videos recently. It seems that YouTube now injects random low-quality low-view-count videos onto your homepage. They seem to follow "untailored" interests similar to if you open YouTube in a private window. It was becoming quite annoying seeing the thumbnails for, like, Dave The Football Guy's two view video about the latest sporting controversies, or crappy CinemaSins wannabes, or whatever.

If you're using uBlock Origin, you can add this to your filter rules:

Code: Select all

www.youtube.com##ytd-rich-item-renderer #metadata-line .inline-metadata-item:first-of-type:not(:has-text(/K|M|B|waiting|watching/)):upward(ytd-rich-item-renderer)
www.youtube.com##ytd-compact-video-renderer #metadata-line .inline-metadata-item:first-of-type:not(:has-text(/K|M|B|waiting|watching/)):upward(ytd-compact-video-renderer)

YouTube will then not be able to suggest any video below 1000 views to you. You still get multiple blank spaces on your homepage but I find this much less distracting. This was helpful for me so I'm pasting it here in case it helps others.

Just because a video has less than 1000 views, doesn't mean it is low quality though.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one this is happening to suddenly, although the low-view suggested videos that pop up for me at least seem to make some sense in terms of categories.

Yeah, all of my suggestions with low views have been people playing through Fromsoft games, so there's at least some thread that makes sense.

I agree! But the situation that I'm in is that my homepage currently has: 80-90% suggestions relevant to my interests, almost all >1000 views; 10-20% suggestions which are irrelevant to my interests and what I would call distractingly 'low-quality' (all-caps title, vacuous premise, possibly-AI-generated YouTube-face thumbnail), almost all <1000 views.

I'm probably taking out an occasional example of a legitimately relevant suggestion to check out a smaller video-maker by blocking all the low view count videos. But you'll have to blame YouTube for putting obnoxious videos on my homepage and driving me to do the block!
