EDIT: My gas bill is wrong too. That's £20.00 a month now. I wonder how much of this has changed and i've just not even noticed.

You'll want to check if that includes line rental.

Given that he's talking about Gas and Water bills, I'm gonna assume you mean Standing Charge rather than Line Rental :)

Switching gas and electricity suppliers is a no brainer if you can get out of your current contract without an exit fee. All that matters with gas and leccy is the unit price surely.

You can also get a yearly discount on each gas and electronic if you pay by monthly direct debit and there are also some paperless/online only discounts.

To be fair I think 99% of people pay by monthly direct debit and opt for paperless bills. I mean why wouldn't you.

Been there done that. Used to move every six months and run away from my bills. As far as I know it was all written off.

I've been in situations where there's just no money. But if you are certain about your cashflow, you can use it as a vehicle to stall payment until when you do have it, but it's very risky.

Your food bill could be anywhere from £20 to £100 a week depending on what you eat, if you get takeaways, if you eat out etc

Make a spreadsheet. Put your monthly income at the top and then make estimates for things like:

Rent
Council Tax
Electricity/Water/Gas
Internet
Phone
Food
Travel

And any other regular monthly outgoings you and see how much disposable income you have.

£20 a week? That is pretty optimistic! You'd have to never, ever eat out, make pretty basic meals from scratch and never waste any food to achieve that.

I was able to live on about £40 a month on food when I had no money. Took me days of putting data into a spreadsheet to make sure it was remotely like a balanced diet, however.

I try to keep my food budget as low as possible, but my evening shifts mean I rarely cook from scratch. Plenty of microwave meals (although I normally opt for healthier looking steam meals), and tins of chunky soup at work every night.

I've been poor and managed on £20 a week. Though last time I checked my online banking we managed to drop £400 on food shopping in a month. Not including what Anung had bought or used cash for. Not even including take outs or restaurants.

Bricks were shat and I swallowed my pride and ventured out to asda.

There's nothing wrong with Asda, that's some misplaced food snobbery right there. And it's not particularly cheap, with many prices coming in slightly higher than Morrisons, eg £2.12 for bacon versus £1.99.

The only supermarket I would say is a bit gooseberry fool is Iceland.

Aldi is increasingly well-loved and from what my parents say Lidl is almost identical.

I thought supermarket snobbery was only for when you were in primary school and you didn't want to be the kid whose parents shopped at Farmfoods or Netto. But then you grow up and realise that saving money on like-for-like products is logical.

Yeah, I mainly shop at Lidl. They have a lot of good stuff and some really, really good stuff (e.g. their jamon serrano is about 2/3 price of Tesco and it's nicer). Plus it's cheap. Sometimes I look at my shopping haul and can't believe the price.

I agree with you about Iceland. It really is pretty gooseberry fool.

I shop mostly at Morrisons because its the closest but I think there are merits to most of supermarkets chains - all, in fact, except Tesco in my opinion.
Sainsbury's and Waitrose - great for something a bit more special if you have a few quid leftover, eg a luxury dessert or pizza.
Asda - great if you want a wide selection of items and want to pick up a game or a film at a cheap (and slightly random) price, like £27.94.
Aldi/Lidl - high quality and low price on many like for like products. Aldi has the best supermarket fruit I have sampled.
Tesco - based on my local Tesco this really has nothing of merit.

I wouldn't even say it's snobbery. Just pure waste and poor planning resulting daily trips to tesco for two separate dinners all in. And Anungs infinite snacking grub. £10 a day outside the big shop.

Yeah £20 probably a bit optimistic. I think £30 would be achievable if you never ate out/got takeaways though.

I don't care who owns what. I'm not very political. If I was, I wouldn't watch Sky or drive a VW.

I think it speaks for itself when you budget £20 a week for food, that doesn't include meals out. That is a luxury, it's a different budget.
