PostAdvice: Xbox 360 external hard drive

Hey, there - I'm hoping that an Xbox 360 buff will be able to help me out! I've had a quick search of the net but I couldn't find definitive answers.

I haven't used my Xbox 360 for a while and I know that a recent system update allows external (USB) hard drives to be used.

I'd like to know if....

> A self-powered (i.e. no plug required) USB drive could be used?
> Both the internal hard drive and the external hard drive can be used for game installs?
> I could unplug the external drive and attach it to my other Xbox 360 and use the installed games on this other console (as long as I log in with the same Xbox ID)?

Thanks guys :-).

I don't know if you have a PS4, but it might be worthwhile buying a 2tb Seagate Expansion (external hard drive) to upgrade your PS4 memory (it is very very easy to do). You can then put the hard drive that was inside the PS4 into the Seagate Expansion casing and then use that for your Xbox. It's what I did and I am happy with the memory I have for my consoles now and it only cost £60!

Thanks for the thought, Moggy. I have upgraded my PS4 to 2 Tb using an internal Samsung drive and was kinda thinking that I could use the old 500 Gb drive in my PS3. But I don't think I can easily copy the games from my current PS3 drive onto the 500 Gb drive?

PLOT TWIST - this Xbox-based thread has turned into a Sony thread! Moggy is a stealth Sony rep CONFIRMED :o .

I was just trying to help and now suddenly I am the secret love child of NickSCFC and Gamerforever*. I thought better of you Jawa.

Anyway I was flogging Seagate stuff not Sony....

I remember upgrading my PS3 hard drive but can't for the life of me remember if it was easy or not to copy games over. Do you have a USB stick that you could shove the saves on? It's a pain to have to re-install stuff but think of the lovely extra space. ;)

*there's a thread in off topic I could post about that in. ;)

It was a pain, dude. I upgraded my PS3 from a smaller drive to a 320 Gb drive and I had to re-download loads of stuff at legendary ultra-slow PSN speeds.

It's cool to know that the 360 can use both internal and external drives a la Wii U / Xbox One. I hope the PS4 allows external drives to be used in the future (although I suspect it'll take me a few years before the current 2 Tb of space becomes full).

Thanks for your tips and thoughts, mhtl and Moggy  .
