I wonder who the number 1 contender would be for stepping in and having a shot if the US and co left.

I think China perhaps? I don't think Russia wants to go in there, again. Go watch "9 Rota" to know why.

Oh and the Afghans were at war with themselves LONG before the US entered the fray. Do you not remember how the Northern alliance fought against the Taliban?

I don't know very much about the conflicts that happened there prior to '79, but can safely guess the constant instability has made it seem the tempting target for invasion that it is. Why divide and conquer when you can just conquer and go?

I think in many ways, as bleak as the outlook for Afghanistan is once Coalition troops are gone (and it really is), the fact is we should probably be worried about what comes next. It's true enough that for a good decade or longer Afghanistan has fulfilled a role first defined by George Orwell as 'the perpetual war'.

Perpetual war refers to a lasting state of war with no clear ending conditions. It also describes a situation of ongoing tension that seems likely to escalate at any moment, similar to the Cold War.

"..."The book" explains that the purpose of the unwinnable, perpetual war is to consume human labour and commodities..."

The twentieth century is littered with many such 'unwinnable', wholly pointless wars and the 21st century has already got off to a great start with a few of its own.

What follows the completely redundant, wasteful, politically-motivated 'war' in Afghanistan should worry us all. Because if history teaches us anything it is that something surely will.

I'd imagine the 34 million people who live in Afghanistan give a gooseberry fool. And everyone who isn't a complete bellend.

America especially will always need some kind of target to justify their insane defense expenditure. I'd imagine killing 'terrorists' in the middle east will continue to be used as their justification for such spending for the foreseeable future.

awwww bless.

no one gave a gooseberry fool before 9/11, no one will give after we leave, you may get a little nod about it on some bbc4 documentary now and again, the aftermath series or some gooseberry fool, but honestly its not important to the white christian west.

same thing happend in Vietnam, U.S and their allies pulled out, within a few months there was no coverage.

no one cares.

No one cares about Vietnam? One of the most important events in the 20th Century, which has since been explored by all forms of media?

Anyway, no one has mentioned the Kandahar killings yet, or is that why the thread was created? I'd like to see if people care about this as much as the 6 dead soldiers, but of course they won't. I think this incident was actually largely influenced by those dead soldiers.

Part of the reason for that is because America has tried to have all references of the conflict totally purged from history since they lost

There was an interesting and intelligent sounding chap on PM today, he was the American report writer for the government or some such thing. Basically he was saying that 90% of the nation is rural and actually just pottering along pretty well - the rural angry places like Kandahar and Helmand have been difficult but once the Western forces turn up en masse the real resistance was quelled quite rapidly. Events such as the riots appear much worse due to the only non-military Western presence is in Kabul where all the shouting is, but 90% of the country is just bimbling along.

Not entirely sure how much of that I believe, but he has a point that a dedicated and trained Afghan Army & police service (and they have had 10 years to build) would be able to run a rural country OK. The Taliban will probably attain some power, but so long as the constitution withholds then hopefully they will partake in the democratic aspect of the country.

Afghan army kills 10 militants. Taliban strength, hardly weakened. Taliban suicide bomber blows up one bus filled with kids/police officers/soldiers. Afghan moral, severely weakened. Then sneak in a little bit of false information to get the tribes fighting each other and you have sectarian violence. The country will fall apart in no time.

Well that American who shot up those civilians in Afghanistan probably won't pay as heavy a price as he would if he had shot up white folk.
