Man, this was a frustrating listen. I really enjoyed about half of it, and the other half was total bollocks. It was like they had a few good ideas, but couldn't sustain a whole album. It was a real shame, as I loved the sound of the album, and when it clicked it was brilliant, but too often it went back to the old widdly nonsense and odd vocals.

5/10.

These were pretty much my exacts thoughts, except I'm going to be a little harsher .

Sun City Girls - Torch Of The Mystics: 4/10

I thought the first half was pretty pants to be honest but it did pick up towards the end. Still too much arty stuff for me to handle though.

All up to date. There's only one person who has reviewed all albums now, so no need to visit random.org today! Take it away andretmzt. :)

Listened to the Sun City Girls album about a week ago, it was alright besides the weird throat singing from what I can recall.

Noise Unit - Decoder

Image

Well I'm picking this as some of the other albums I was thinking of weren't online anywhere, so Noise Unit it is. It's a side project of a few different artists who are mostly associated with Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly. Mostly just instrumental stuff but unlike another side project, this is all electro-/industrial. I listen to this sort of stuff most the time and the great thing I find about the genre is that there is just so much out there waiting to be discovered and for the most part, it is all unique.

I'd personally give this 8/10 (pushing 9). Maybe it is just me but I always find that with albums, even if they are my favourite band, there will always be a few tracks which I don't like. Still, most the songs on here are brilliant for me.

Another record I've never heard of. Cool. Just had the first few minutes on and it sounds pretty decent. Not really into electronic music but this sounds like something I can get into. Also, a bit of the first track sounds like something out of Mega Man. This is a good thing.

Noise Unit - Decoder - 6/10

Aside from being a massive Chemical Brothers fan and listening to stuff like Daft Punk, Justice and The Prodigy, I don't listen to that wide a range of electronic music.

There's nothing on the album I'm immediately blown away by nor anything I immediately dislike, it just seems a bit generic and videogame soundtrack-ish (almost every track would fit perfectly in a Wipeout game or any number of side scrolling shooters), there's a couple of tracks towards the end I like (Biosphere is quite atmospheric and has a nice amount of strange noises in a Chemical Brothers kind of way and has hints of early 90's Prodigy).

It's not bad as something to have on as background music but I don't think I'd listen to it often.

Tennis - Cape Dory - 3/10

To paraphrase a certain Ren & Stimpy character; "No sir, I don't like it"

It's just far too twee and retro, plus the vocals are annoying.

I liked this a lot. However, I struggled to get through the whole album in a single sitting, but in short bursts it's great.

Noise Unit - Decoder

This was fairly decent. In places I found it a bit hard work, and a couple of the tracks washed over me like they weren't even there. I guess it's not the kind of music I'd normally listen to. That said, I really enjoyed some of it, particularly the opener and Firing Line, which was really lovely.

6/10.

Hmm, a paltry three reviews for the last record. Looks like this is slowly grinding to a halt. I'll keep it running as long as people still want to play, but could do with a bit more input guys!

Next up is Jam-Master Jay.

Had a list of about 10 different albums I was thinking of sharing with the Album Club. Listen to many styles of music and was always thinking that perhaps the particular album I was listening to at the moment was what I should share. Was leaning towards Eric Johnson, but we've already had a guitar virtuoso in Satriani. Classic Opeth and Queensrÿche also came up, but again, we've had similar already. In the end it came down to Iron Butterly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida or Opeth - Heritage..

Chose Opeth because of their diverse range of styles and have been listening to a lot of their stuff recently. Usually Progressive Death Metal, but this album is a departure from the norm so the lack of Death Growls should be a welcome change for most people.

Will get around to listening and rating the last couple of albums submitted over the next week or so hopefully. Been a rather busy time of late.

Opeth - Heritage - 8/10

Really enjoyed this album, the variety of musical styles in any given track is increedible, I love how there's a constant shift between quiet melodic sections and heavier drum and screeching guitar flurries.

The last track is a bit boring compared to the rest but doesn't detract too much from my overall rating.

I think I might have to buy a copy.

Pretty decent background music but a bit long and overly repetitive for my liking.

Should check out their earlier albums too as you liked this so much. You'll find that even in their heavier albums complete with Death Metal vocals that they will switch over to these more melodic songs and sections which often also feature the softer vocal style prevalent throughout Heritage. Out of their previous records I'd recommend Damnation (similar to Heritage overall) and Still Life (heavier but often breaks into softer melodies).

Seem like a fanboy. :fp:

Opeth Heritage
A decent amount of variety. A few of the tracks sort of blended into the background but on the whole I enjoyed it and actually listened to it twice, as I was busy and missed a few tracks the first time.
I'd say the final track was my favourite.

Pretty much this. My friends tell me I own Heritage, though I can't remember buying it (Hmm, its on WMP so I must have it). All I know is I barely listened to it, and what I did hear didn't sound very good.
