Experimental Audio Research : The Koner Experiment

I'll give this a 7/10. Unusual but enjoyable background music. Loses points for not really having any memorable tracks which is hard to do with ambient music but not impossible.

Ok, in an attempt to bring this thread back to life I thought I would give some background to my album, otherwise it will just sit there in a vacuum.

The Köner Experiment by Experimental Audio Research is actually a remix of another album by E.A.R. (backronym!). Experimental Audio Research is essentially Richard Kember (aka Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3). Now and again he collaborates with other musicians on the albums. The album this is a remix of is "Beyond the Pale", which was originally recorded in 1992 but not released until 1996, and featured Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Eddy Prevost (AMM) and Kevin Martin (God, Techno Animal).

Now, the remix is almost totally unrecognisable to the donor album, with the only occasional sound filtering through. For a start the original album has no discernible rhythm, it is mostly a fog of ambient drones with the occasional sound rising out of it. The remix has a heartbeat constructed of this drone running throughout it. Also, the tracks are all untitled.

The remixing was done by Thomas Köner, a multimedia artist. His own work is pretty hard to describe.

Experimental Audio Research- Koner Experiment. 3/10

Nothing there really bad, but it's boring. probably be alight in the background if you were sexing a whale.

So I managed to get through all of this. It's a difficult thing to review, I'll admit. You can certainly admire its technical skill, and there is a certain ambient lull to the whole thing which was quite soothing at times. But as an album? It was pretty boring. I can't say a derived an awful lot of pleasure from listening to it, and I can't say I'll ever have the inclination to listen to it again. Still, it was better than Coffinworm.

3/10.

Just out of interest, OS, what do you think of the album?

I think it is great. One of my most listened to albums, which is why it was chosen. My short list of albums was Yanqui UXO by GSYBE (too conventional plus I think a lot of people have listened to it), Nunatak by Thomas Koner (a step too far into the ambient), Homotopy to Marie by Nurse with Wound (I didn't want to give people nightmares) and lastly Data Rape by E.A.R. (an hour of songs created by speak and spell machines being tortured).

This brings together most of the elements of music that interest me at the moment.

I can see why you think it is boring, but for me the relentlessness of it, with the odd tortured sound bubbling up to the surface makes it for me.

I'm one of those guys who gets caught up in the sounds of pneumatic drills and trains and the hum of a fridge.

Oh No Ono: Eggs

4/10

I did like the instrumental in some songs but the vocals really killed it for me.

As I said, The Koner Experiment was the least extreme of my choices

I hope you listened to it at night, in the dark, with headphones.

I think it would be a particularly unpleasant experience under those circumstances! Kinda wish you'd gone with that one actually. I had a far more extreme reaction to it than the EAR record, which kind of just ambled along, not really doing that much.

I think it's safe to say that you and I have a fairly different taste in music.

Experimental Audio Research - Koner Experiment

5/10

Listened to half last night and the other half just now. Got a bit too repetitive for me.

Oh No Ono - Eggs
A bit too cheery in places for my liking but overall I thought it was good and very easy to listen to without being bland or boring.
7/10

Edit:
I see from the first page I haven't rated my own choice, so:

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Weld
Crazy Horse at their best but it loses a point for dragging slightly in the middle
9/10

Experimental Audio Research - Koener Experiment: 5/10

Well it was certainly something different but unfortunately I didn't really like it. When I first switched it on I thought that it would be fairly similar to some of the stuff I occasionally listen to but instead of there being a melody, a message or anything really, it ended up being a bunch of guys messing with some synths from the sound of it. Not for me to be honest.

Cool, I think I'm up to date. Can everyone check the OP to make sure they're up to date with reviews and stuff. It's pretty tricky making sure everything is correct, so if you have any issues, just let me know.

I'm not adding in people's own scores as everyone is going to be biased towards their own record. It's always good to get your thoughts though. :)

Anyway, on with the show. Three people on all reviewed, Random says... 3.

Go for it Pedz. :D

Listened to that Koner Experiment album quite enjoyed it, good to work or fall asleep to, its probably my second favorite so far after tennis. 7.5/10

I also tried to listen to that coffinworm stuff but it was really bad so I couldn't make it the whole way through 0/10.

Pedz wrote:I'll be honest, I had no idea what I should go for. I was thinking about choosing something by Nightwish, but assumed people will have listened to their stuff (Did I assume worn?) I though thought 'I'll go with some Joe Satriani'. Again, I assumed people would have listened to his amazing-ness. But strawberry float it. Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien it is.

Sorry for lack of links, but I don't have spotify or use any other music services.
