Welcome to the Virtual Console thread! Here you can discuss the service, new releases or any experiences you have with VC games. I'll update this thread with new releases, so you can keep up to date and see if your favourite game has been uploaded!
Enjoy :)

Latest Releases

Confirmed Games/Five Possibilities for the Next Release

Confirmed
    Nothing as of yet!

Possibilities

(Note: The games here are only some possibilities of what can be released. The actual release may not have any of these games)

    What is Virtual Console?

The Virtual Console is Nintendo's online downloadable game service for the Wii. Customers exchange real money for 'Wii Points', which in turn can be exchanged for Virtual Console games.

How much are Wii Points, and where can I purchase them?

One hundred Wii points equates to 70p/€1. There are three methods of purchasing Wii Points:

1)Through the Wii Shop Channel: Using a credit card (Visa or Mastercard), customers enter their card details over a secure connection to buy 1000, 3000 or 5000 Wii Points, which are £7/€10, £21/€30 and £35/€50 respectively.

2)Via pre-paid 2000 Wii points cards: These can be found in many retailers. They retail for an RRP of £15, but the price varies between retailers. The customer enters a code contained on the card onto the Wii Shop Channel, which the customer can then turn into Wii Points. They are region locked, so make sure you purchase the cards only from your own region.

3)Through Club Nintendo: If you have a Club Nintendo account, you can register Nintendo products at the website (http://www.nintendo.co.uk) which are transferred into stars. These stars can then be used to buy Wii points here. Four stars equates to 1 Wii Point, and members can purchase 100/300/500/1000 Wii Point codes to input on the Shop Channel. These codes come in regular supply, so check regularly for codes to be uploaded.

When and how often is the service updated?

The service is updated every two weeks with 1-5 games. When daylight saving is on (From the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October), we get the games at Thursday->Friday Midnight. Otherwise (From the last Sunday of October to the last Sunday of March), we get them at 11pm Thursday night.

(Note that between fortnights of Virtual Console releases, WiiWare games are uploaded to the shop channel)

What systems are there, and how much are the games for each system?

      NES - 500 Wii Points
      SNES - 800 Wii Points
      Nintendo 64(N64) - 1000 Wii Points
Sega Master System - 500 Wii Points
      Sega Mega Drive(MD) - 800 Wii Points
      Commodore 64 - 500 Wii Points
      Turbografx-16/Turbografx-CD(TG-16/TG-CD) - 600/800 Wii Points respectively
      Neo Geo(NG) - 900 Wii Points
(There are exceptions to the rule with the pricing, see the next question)

Are there any games that have unique prices, and why?

R-Type - 800 Wii Points (Released as two games in Japan, but one over here. Presumably done to make pricing for the game fair across regions)
Sin and Punishment - 1200 Wii Points (Import title, plus some text has been translated into English)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- 600 Wii Points (Licence. Was originally 500 Wii Points)

There are many other games with an 100 point increase in price. This is because they are import titles.

Also, any Turbografx-CD titles will be 800 Wii Points instead of 600 for standard Turbografx titles.

What controllers can be used for Virtual Console games?

      Image
    Wii Remote

-Held horizontally to play like a NES controller.
-Can be used for NES, TG-16/CD, MD, MS and NG games. Cannot be used for SNES or N64 games.
-Some prefer to use it for NES and TG-16/CD games over the other controllers available.
-Generally not recommended for MD games, as the A button on the remote is cumbersome to use regularly. Some MD games also have features for a six button controller which the remote is unable to use. Games like Sonic however (Which only requires the dpad and one button) are unaffected by these issues.
-Also not recommended for NG games. NG games use four buttons, which are mapped to B, A, 1 and 2 on the remote. Trying to use all of these with any consistency is too cumbersome to be practical.

      Image
    Classic Controller

-Can be used with every game on the service
-Some prefer the Wii remote for NES and TG-16/CD games. For TG-16/CD games which heavily rely on 'turbo' buttons however, the Classic Controller is more ideal.
-By far the most ideal method to play SNES games. It is modelled after the SNES controller after all! Also the best method for NG games.
-Generally works well for N64 games. Whether it betters the GameCube controller for N64 games is down to personal preference; some prefer the Classic Controller, others the GC controller.

      Image
    Gamecube Controller

-Can be used with every game on the service.
-The controller is far better suited to 3D games than it is 2D, so for 2D games you may prefer the Classic Controller or (If possible) the Wii remote.
-For SNES games, the button letters of the SNES controller map to the letters of the GC controller. This has proven very awkward for many SNES games, which were designed for the formation of the SNES's face buttons as opposed to the GC controller's. This also carries over (to a lesser extent) to NG games. The Classic Controller is considered far more suitable for SNES/NG play.
-Some prefer to use it over the Classic Controller for N64 games, usually due to the placement of the left analogue stick. Try both methods if possible and see what suits you.
-(Not necessarily related to the Virtual Console) The only controller in this list which works with Gamecube games.

What's this about a 'Gift' feature?

The Virtual Console allows you to send a game as a gift to a friend. You have to have swapped Wii codes with the person first, so they appear on your friend list. You pay for a game, and provided the friend is in your country and does not have the game (There will be an error message if either of these conditions are not met), a letter is sent to their Wii and they follow it to download the game!

Where can I go for reviews of Virtual Console games?

http://www.vc-reviews.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is an excellent website that lists every Virtual Console game with a brief review, a blurb of information and (Usually) a video. Every game listed below links to a review of that game from this website. They also have a Coming Soon List of games that have been age rated or announced to be released, but are not yet on the service.

    Currently Available

Click here to go to a list of all Virtual Console games available in the US and EU regions. You can sort by factors such as region or system, and each game links to its review.

So, let the discussion begin! :D

I may try and get a list of all VC games released integrated into the first post (If everyone remembers on the old forum I had them linking to their VC reviews links, but it's a bit time consuming to constantly link each of them so I'll try and sort out a non-hyperlink version, unless everyone really wants the hyperlinks), and I may do things such as a list of forumites each reccomending their favourite VC games :)

I'd say just link to VC reviews, as it's easy enough to get a review for a specific game.

Have a special 5 titles out now, and a future 5 recomended titles, though.
(With links to reviews and pics)

You can just copy mine from Playsona, if you'd like.

The VC is one the best things about the Wii if you ask me. Spent so much on XBLA and PSN but nothing compared to the VC

Am I the only one that's come to a grinding halt in both Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2??? It's bizarre. Or maybe I'm just rubbish...

For me the VC has been a collection garbage can, i bought so many of the games for nostalgic purposes, but at the end of the day have hardly spent any time on them. Ocarina of Time, however, gave me the chance to finally finish it off and see the ending and super mario 64 will always be a joy to play now and again. I just dont have the motivation to play or complete both super mario world and zelda a link to the past and as for lylat wars and paper mario, they are simply too boring for me to consider playing them for any length of time.

I've never played 2, but 1 was quite easy, although I got stuck on the final boss for a few days. VC for me has been an oppurtunity to play games I never got the chance to, but wanted to. It's also given me a chance to rebuy some classics I own like MK64, it's annoying to have to set up the 64 to play it.

    Bring on Earthbound Nintendo, please?

Maybe i should dive in. I even have the star points from the club nintendo thing. I just cant be arsed to type in the codes....

     @ Jazzem.

Console gaming- There's no mention of Shining Force in your post. :o Also, no Paper Mario- shame on you. ;)
    What's Shining Force you ask?

Dante- How about a new start for a new forum?

k_F- Yep, it's definitely worth getting some stuff.

(Kill two birds with one stone here- Jazzem- something like this:

    Final's Fantastic Five

    Image

You need these games. You just do.

    1- Shining Force - Mega Drive- 800 points :D :D

    A phenomenal strategy RPG. Essential.
If you can find it, there's a remake of it on the GBA.
You'll definitely love it if you like anything Like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars,
    Glowing review, natch.

    Image

    (pic from the GBA version)

2- Super Mario World SNES- 800 points
In my opinion, the best game ever made.
It's an incredible platformer, and holds up superbly even to this day. It's only in second as I had already played it on the SNES
    Review
    Image

    3- Paper Mario N64- 1000 points
A truly stunning game (that consolegaming has oddly ignored) that I never had the chance to play back in the day, but it doesn't matter as it holds up well. I probably prefer TTYD, but it's still fantastic, and one of the best 1000 points that you could spend.
    5* review
    Image
(GC version, but they're basically the same)

4- Adventures of Lolo- NES- 500 points
An incredible surprise, I had never heard of this before I was sent it, and it has turned into one of my favourite games on the system.
    4* review
    Image

5- Zelda: A Link to the Past SNES- 800 points
Admittedly, this game also has huge amounts of nostalgia on it's side, but it really is a magical game. A huge step up in the Zelda franchise, spawning some of the greatest games ever made.
    http://www.vc-reviews.com/games/snes/legend_of_zelda_a_link_to_the_past
    Image

    Final's Favourite Future Titles

    1- Shining Force 2 - Mega Drive
After really, really enjoying Shining Force, I can't wait for this. It's apparently better than the original, too, so it's sure to be sensationsal. :jump:

    2- Super Mario RPG- SNES
I thought that both Mario and Luigi games were stunning, so this should be incredible.

    3- Chrono Trigger- SNES
An RPG with huge numbers of fans worldwide, sounds great, so I can't wait to give this a go.
Probably won't be released now, as there is an DS remake inbound.

4- Sunset Riders- SNES/ Mega Drive
A brilliant wild west themed 2D side scrolling shooter. It's got great co-op too, and this was played for aaages back in the day.

    5- Majora's Mask- N64
An excellent addition to the Zelda franchise, and there are many that say that it's THE best Zelda.

    What a good idea!

    Image

At 5... Kirby's Dream Course, for the SNES (800 points)

    Image

Do not be fooled by the appearance of the lightweight pink gelatinous blob; this is a tough, deep game which will see you hurl your classic controller just as often as the little round ball-icon goes off the course. Which is a lot, especially on the later courses. But as a 3D novelty isometric golf title, it's uniqueness and depth come as something of a surprise.

At 4... Shining Force, for the Mega Drive (800 points)

    Image

Listen to final on this one. I took the plunge, and was rewarded with one of the most intricate yet accessible SRPGs I've ever played. It can get a little tricky at times, especially if you're not careful with how you level up your party, but if you put in the time and effort to get it right, you wont be disappointed.

At 3... The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, for the SNES (800 points)

    Image

If you haven't already played it, you're lucky enough to be able to enjoy what is (in my eyes) the best instalment in the Zelda franchise, bar none. It's a masterpiece of top-down 2D adventure gaming, with a story that drives you along just enough to care about what's happening without feeling forced or convoluted. If you have played it, then remind yourself of just how good it is.

At 2... Super Metroid, for the SNES (800 points)

    Image

Revisited just this past month in an Edge Retro special, Super Metroid is simply one of the most atmospheric, charismatic games you'll ever play. Pulling tricks in level design and item acquisition that Metroid Prime hadn't even begin to think of yet, it's a testament to the classic Nintendo of old, filled with some of the most memorable boss battles and fiendish puzzles of the 16-bit era.

And at number 1... Mega Man 2, for the NES (500 points)

    Image

The best of the series. The best 2D platformer of its era, potentially of any era. The best soundtrack to a video game yet developed. Improving on the base features of its predecessor, it exposes game linearity for the sham that it is withotu sacrificing any impact made from encountering each of its unique, brilliantly-designed stages. An absolute steal at 500 points - You really, really need this in your life.

5.Splatterhouse - yeah, well strawberry float you
    4. Samurai Showdown - As someone who doesn't like the genre, I really click with SS and can always raise a smile and a decent game out of this
    3. Super Mario World - A classic, and though not as good as Yoshi's Island (which isn't up) it still remains the best main mario game
    2. Super Metroid - Though I prefer Fusion, this is the 2nd best Metroid game of all time imo
    1. Sin & Punishment; I absolutely love this game, cannot get enough of it

Not as much effort, but then what else would you expect

Nope, my Wii is currently in a box in the spare room as doing some shifting and renovations to my room - Will probably get along with strong bad game. 2 is suppose to be better so can't see any reason not to get (unless th 360 arcade version i released this year)
