Alienware Area-51 m15x gaming laptop

ImageImage

...we’d like to start this review by stating on the record that this is the fastest notebook we’ve ever seen, regardless of screen size.

The two key components are the 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme X9000 mobile 'Penryn' processor and GeForce Go 8800M GTX graphics chip, both of which pack a punch and also bump the price up to stratospheric levels. We’ve previously seen the 8800M in the Rock Xtreme 770 and were extremely impressed: this GPU has epic gaming performance.

As reviewed: £2538

I don't know Cal, it looks pretty slow to me.

Have you got any vids of it moving?

Makes my brand new XPS 1530 cry.

Although I have a pretty good spec laptop:

2.60ghz dual core with 6mb cache
256mb 8600GTX GFX card
4GB ram
1920x1200 XVGA screen

you could build a completely kick arse PC with higher specs for less than that

Fashion item for spoilt kids with no friends. Which makes it pretty pointless as a fashion item, then.

CG renders do wonders for making a product look better than it actually is.

Laptop that has 1hr 20m of battery life is an epic fail. You'd have to be a total moron to use this as a desktop replacement over a small form factor PC for example.

On the other hand, as something to take to college or uni and use plugged into a wall outlet whenever possible, it might be all right.

And what student can afford to spend £2,500 on a machine with the performance of a PC that costs half the price?

How many students can drape an AC power chord across a classroom regarding H&S?

Just because you can afford something doesn't make it any more sane.

You could afford a gaming PC as powerful as that for half the price, and spend the remaining money on an ultra portable notebook that weights 1.5kg and has a battery life of up to 8 hours.

Last I checked you can't play TF2 in the middle of a lecture.

I don't get laptops with massive screens, my dad has a laptop with a 21" screen and it's too heavy to use portably and gets horrendously hot.

It's why I like this Eee I'm using now, the only problem is that it uses Linux which is awful to use next to Windows.

Anyway, yeah that's a nice looking notebook even if I would never pay that much for one.

Really? Why? I've read everywhere that's really quick and intuitive.

Just buy XP OEM and install it if you want, but it'll run like crap because it's a bloated OS. The point of the Eee is to get very simple tasks done quick. It's not a proper laptop. Plus I'd take the option of more SSD space anyday.

You could try other Linux distros such as Ubuntu, which are more like Windows.

I'm gonna get an Eee PC 901 I reckon.

And because I have copies of STALKER, UT3, NWN2 and Dark Messiah for PC that I've never been able to play. They're being saved for the day I finally have something like the beast at the top of this thread. By the power of Greyskull, that day WILL come!

You could even afford a same spec Alienware tower for less.

I thought we had weened you off Alienware Cal. Don't do it!

This what I see when I see a sexy Alienware:
