DC's Detective Comics featuring transgender and lesbian characters is a regular best seller. Likewise their Green Lanterns featuring a hispanic woman with mental health issues and a muslim main character.

Diversity is fine, you just need good talent behind the comic.

That's my point - one of the things in the bleeding cool article was an argument between Bendis and that guy Gabriel, who told him that diversity doesn't sell in a disagreement over Miles Morales. Which is bollocks.

I got my first comic subscription in about 25 years about a month ago, 2000AD weekly and the monthly Megazine. Have to say I’m loving it. Slaine’s still nonsense which is great to see, I absolutely love what little I’ve seen of Harry Absalom (nothing endears me to a character quite so quickly as seeing them punch a thinly-veiled brexiteer in the mouth and call him a pillock in the very first page that you see him), Dredd’s Dredd. Loving what I’ve read so far.

The problem a lot of people had with Marvel over the past few years was some of the main established heroes being completely replaced with new ones shoehorned into the legacy character's mantle. Miles Morales Spider-Man and Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel were fine because they were well thought out, well written and set up over a long period of time. Falcon as the new Captain America made so much more sense than Bucky taking up that mantle a few years ago too, but then that run was basically made pointless when Marvel announced another Captain America series with Steve Rogers again. But then you had:

Bruce Banner killed off in the most stupid manner and being replaced by a young Amadeus Cho as the new "Totally Awesome Hulk". No thanks.

Iron Man put in a coma and shelved, replaced by some child character Bendis basically created for his daughter. (Dr Doom also took over as Iron Man but this one wasn't anywhere near as prominent)

Thor suddenly becoming unworthy of Mjolnir and Jane Foster taking over the mantle.

Wolverine dying and being replaced by X-23 which was completely against what both characters previously wanted.

A new Wasp being introduced who was Hank Pym's secret daughter (this character getting a solo series seemed utterly pointless when original Wasp is still around)

Hank Pym basically being an irrelevant character since Scott Lang is Ant-Man (hello, MCU influence) and they randomly decided to introduce a new Giant-Man whose name I can't even remember.

Richard Rider Nova being shelved for years and replaced with a child character created because the writer was still grieving over his child's death (I realise how awful this sounds, but this is basically what happened)

And you've still got the time-displaced teenage original five X-Men hanging around like a bad smell.

After picking up a few issues in a shop I too have taken out the same subscription about a month ago along with the Ultimate Collection hardback series. I’d bought odd issues since I was a kid but never subscribed until now.

I’m particularly enjoying the “best of” approach that hardback series takes with Ballad of Halo Jones being the standout issue thus far.

Oh absolutely, I agree with you. I just wanted to demonstrate some concrete examples.

You’d recommend the Ultimate Collection sub then? Seems like I’d get a fair bit out of it having missed entire decades of their output.

It's still early days but I'm enjoying it so far. I've read the first three books (Slaine: The Horned God, The Ballad of Halo Jones and Shakara) and there hasn't been a bad one yet. The books themselves are pretty good quality too.

Hickman might be coming over to DC too. :datass: He's stated previously he wants to do a Legion of Superheroes book and despite Saturn Girl popping up several times since Rebirth, nothing has come of it.

This has been in the works for a long time. But I understand that Jonathan Hickman, who has been working on creator-owned comics since he left Marvel Comics at the end of Secret Wars, has has been in talks with DC Comics. The nature of which has been a long time in the agreeing, but I understand whatever it would be would not be an exclusive deal, leaving Jonathan Hickman open to work on other work-for-hire projects. That could include Marvel.

As it stands, DC Comics asked Hickman to pitch several things and he has. They have made him an offer. He has yet to accept. But the decision for the man who shepherded Hickman into Marvel Comics from Image Comics, Brian Bendis, to join DC Comics does feel like the fates aligning.

I've heard good things about BMB's Daredevil run. What volume/issues did he write?

Hickman is probably the one thing that could get me interested in a DC comic.

Daredevil vol. 2, #16-19, 26-50, 56-60
Daredevil vol. 2, #61-81; What If...Karen Page Had Lived; Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #6-8

It's a really great run.

I'd recommend picking up Mr Miracle which is fantastic.

What's with all the gaps in the issues?

Also, Mister Miracle is so good. Tom King is a genius.

#51- 55 was a fill-in Echo origin story written by David Mack, I guess to give Bendis some time to get ahead. #16-19 was the first Daredevil story Bendis did but it's not really the start of the run.

I do get the impression that Marvel comics are going to be neglected for some time to come while their film arm takes up most of the focus.

Yes

Gabby (no idea who she was, she's in All-New Wolverine)
X-23 (looks like she's about to spew)
Nightcrawler (also looks like he's about to spew)
Namor (why Marvel are still desperate to insist he's a mutant I don't know)
Gentle (never heard of him in my life, had to goggle him)
Trinary (new character)

Big fan of them announcing Jean's new book and entire team before the event about her return has even begun.

I’m massively out of the loop with comics in general and have never really followed DC but am I right in my understanding that they are bringing/have already brought back Watchmen in some capacity as part of the regular DC Universe?
