Day 18 - The Long Journey Home

This post is mostly text, a write up of the last day. There are very few photos and I understand you may all not want to read so much, for that reason, I've spoiler boxed the post so it doesn't fill the page.

Woke up to the sound of the screeching DS alarm, 6am. Had to make the most of the last day, Yuka had arranged to meet me at 8.30 for breakfast and to go to the airport with me. I was feeling awful, I didn't want to leave Japan now things with Yuka had gone back to how they were in London. I stayed in bed a bit longer, was feeling really depressed that morning.

Finally got out of bed, showered, dressed and suitcases ready. It was sad seeing everything back in cases knowing the most important thing wouldn't be coming back with me. I went to the lobby to check out and went to the station to meet Yuka.

I got to the station about 20 past, lugging the cases along really slowed me down, one was for my clothes, the other was an empty case I brought just to fill with gifts, on the way it held my winter coat which I decided to wear today as it was quite cold. I waited at the station till 40 past, no sign of Yuka, I tried calling, no answer. I didn't know where she was and why she wasn't there or picking up, I was worried and kept trying to get in contact.

She eventually came running down the stairs of the station, tears in her eyes and holding a large back. She gave me a large hug and kept apologising for being late. We bought our tickets for the train to the airport then walked off to Mister Donut. We brought a load of donuts for the train, we had no time to sit and eat. Yuka also brought me a bag of my favourite donuts to bring home with me, the Honey Churuos.

We got back to the station and made it to the train just in time. The train ride to the airport seemed to go quick despite taking an hour, the whole time me and Yuka were holding hands, she later told me she still loved me

We got to the airport, had lots of time after checking so quickly brought some stuff at the shops to burn the last of my cash and then went to a nice cafe that over looked the departures terminal. The time at the cafe went to quickly, Yuka gave me the large bag she had brought, it was full of presents for me, all gift wrapped.

We left it late but I eventually had to go through security, leaving her behind. It was emotional and upsetting but I had to go. As we hugged and kissed for the last time, I put the note I had secretly wrote in her pocket without her noticing. I then went through security and Yuka went to wait for me at the window by the stairs.

Security decided to go through my gift case, it was very tightly packed, I was worried everything would spring out when it was opened. As my contents were taken out and placed aside, the woman checking my bag was commenting on the contents, "PIKMIN!! So cute!!" I was getting annoyed because it was taking ages to repack my bag, when I finished, I saw Yuka waiting at the window, she was pointing at her watch looking worried, I had just 10 minutes to get to the plane.

Waved to Yuka and had to run down the ramp to the plane. It wasn't the plane, it was a big que for passport cheques, I was stuck at the back and my plane was in 10 minutes! I managed to blag my way to the front of the line, got through and ran for the plane. Made it just as gates were closing!

Got on the plane and to my seat, I asked for an aisle seat because I hated climbing over people on the flight to Tokyo. To my surprise, the window seat next to me was empty! I took that instead getting a great view out the window. The flight home went quite fast, I watched a few films and fell asleep for 4 hours. The flight back always seems quicker. On the way back, I watched Forrest Gump for the first time, made me quite upset after everything that had happened.

I got back to London and didn't bother texting or calling anyone to say I had returned, I was really upset and just wanted to get home. It was cold and raining and the train was delayed. On the train the passengers were rude and kept knocking or trying to sit on my bags.

I got home and had to pretend everything was ok, be all high spirits and tell my family about my amazing time in Japan. They seemed to have a long list of questions for which I wasn't in the mood for. I made my excuses and just went to my room.

Despite all the low points with Yuka, I had an amazing time in Japan. At this time of year, the country is really beautiful, I hope i've managed to capture that in my photos. Once me and Yuka broke up, we got back together again, all the bad memories of the last few months were gone and I could enjoy my time with her as we did in London.

It was a perfect ending to a beautiful relationship. I'm sure me and Yuka will stay good friends forever, whatever happens. I'm really greatful we could end on a high, good terms and have a great time together till the very end. We both still love each other but knew the relationship would go downhill because of the distance and her situation so it was best we ended it the way we did.

Thank you all for your support during my trip, at times, it was really difficult and upsetting. I'm glad you were all here to help me through the difficult times and make me laugh and smile. Without this thread, I would have felt completely alone in Japan at times. I've had a great time updating this thread and keeping track of my trip, I hope you've all enjoyed following it.

A huge thanks to everyone in this thread, even though you wasn't there, you were all a big part of my J-Adventure.

It's been a great topic, Alpha, really enjoyed following it.

What was on the note? C'mon, tell us. Don't be like that scene from Lost in Translation. Also have you opened the gift-wrapped presents yet? Do so and show us what you got. :shifty:

Also pictures of all/any of the loot you brought back with you.

Glad you've enjoyed the thread.

Sorry but the contents of the note stays between me and Yuka, it's personal.

I opened one present, last night I was really ill and Yuka said I should open a specific present. It was a cute bear hot water bottle :)

Here's the mountain of loot, this all managed to fit in my small travel case

Still don't believe you didn't get the Purple or White Pikmen (quite obviously the best two. :P). A nice haul you've managed there despite that.

So, costs wise, how much did this trip put you back in the end?

I feel really guilty now. I've been reading this thread since the third or fourth day but as I'm not a regular poster, I didn't comment at all. It's been a great read - your relationship made it all the more endearing.

Thanks.

...My Peado-Bear?

It's been brilliant though Luke, it's been fantastic looking through all your photos, stirs up alot of memories :D

I'm sorry for how things turned out with Yuka.. seems a bit harsh of her to tell you she still loved you though... that's just a kick in the bollocks really.
Still, at least you got to nail her a few times eh..

I'd like to go back, if only for a day to eat as many bowls of Gyudon as I can! :D

If Carlsberg ever did threads...

Seriously brilliant updates Alpha, if I was on holiday I would not bother updating the forum, but then this was a trip to Japan.

It makes me want to go even more now and I must, after my trip to my homeland India and then Goa.

I think next year I must try out another Asian country, one of my friends just did a trip through a few Asian countries with his wife and said it was awesome, but the gaming geek in me makes me want to see Japan.

strawberry float man, that's sadder than the end of Lost in Translation.

I really don't know what to say without detracting from what you must be going through right now. At least you had a propper goodbye and got to spend time with her. Kind of like a swansong for your relationship.

If you're going to Japan again to see her and need backup, I've got your back man! This thread's really been fantastic and I've loved reading about your ups and downs in such a fantastic country.

I haven't commented once in this thread but I have been reading it. Excellent thread and kudos for keeping it updated. Towards the end it started reminded me of my trip/extended stay in Canada a few years ago. :(

The airport 'scene' reminded me heavily of a similar goodbye I had whilst I was in the Netherlands.
