How long are you going to be in Japan? I wouldn't mind going back this time of year to see the autumn in Japan. Bar the cherry blossom autumn is the second best time of the year to visit. Which hotel you at btw?

I'm going to be there just under 3 weeks, got to get back for work, the day after I get back I have to teach a class at 10 in the morning! I'm staying at the Oak Hotel in Ueno, it's about 10/15 mins walk from the station, quite cheap, 6000Y a night for a single ensuite room.

I'm hoping to go back next year for the cherry blossom.

Ueno eh, yeah in a few guide books of Tokyo that I own Ueno seems to be the cheapest. Its a nice location, close to the park, zoo and easy to get to central Tokyo too. If you haven't been already may I suggest ueno zoo, they have some cute red pandas and a big panda called ling ling that looked like it was dead when I went! Its surprisingly big, the zoo and the cafe type place does good cheap Japanese curry!

That's what she said.

Anyway, the Zoo has been added to the list, didn't go last time because it was closed on the day I wanted to go. So going to go to the Zoo, check out a few dead pandas and have a curry after, nice.

Keep the suggestions coming.

It's definitely built into their culture where sleeping together and all that are concerned. I had to bare faced lie when I meet my girlfriends Chinese parents about never being in the house before. Needless to say when I asked to use the bathroom, they looked quite concerned that I knew the upstairs attic one existed.

It's much stricter for Chinese I think, my friend is dating a Chinese girl and they've been together nearly 3 years, the parents still don't know.

dude your gonna have a great time, this whole thing with the dad is gonna be most of the fun in an odd way, with the phase of approval. you should go and spend some time in Akihabara with the sister, its the ultimate otaku place. also try some puffer fish, at a certified restaurant, apparently there quite good.

im so jealous, i have planned to go to japan for the last 6 years, but i ended up going to China, i might go in summer 2009.

p.s. just for the cheese factor, you should go to that place (i don't actually know where it is) which has a statue that just says love, (you know, its in densha otoko) you should kiss your girlfriend there accidentally then she will never leave you.

You've probably already done this on a previous visit, but there's a couple of more rural places which are easily accessible from Tokyo. Firstly, there's Hakone where you can see Mount Fuji, and there's also some great traditional shrines in Nikko.

There's some more information here:

Hakone

Nikko

China>Japan ( ;) ). I really want to go over to Japan though, experience what a proper Eastern Democracy is like, as well as clean and well-organized cities. What's rural Japan like? Is there much variation in landscapes and climate?

Have a great trip though, good luck with meeting the parents! I wish Chinese girls were a bit more like Japanese girls (ie. willing to have a conversation and not act like 15 year-olds), I really may have to make that trip...

You need to have a photo-perfect Big Mac!
Japan is the only place i have had anything close to the holy grail of McD's. Trust me, its worth it!

If you like football, go watch the Reds (Urawa Red Diamonds), they have the loudest crowd in the J-League. Just make sure it isn't being played in the old Komaba Stadium. The Saitama Stadium was one of the 2002 venues and is far,far superior.

You need to have a Gyudon from Yoshinoya... for added bonus points, cause a riot by claiming there is going to be another beef shortage.

I flew 24 cans of Irn Bru with me when I went to Japan with no trouble whatsoever.

Haha, as a big fan of Densha Otoko, I HAVE to find that statue, anyone know where it is?

Cheers Chris, couldn't get to either place last time because of my travel partner but will try get to at least Hakone.

HrC, i'll try for a photo perfect Big Mac but that'll be my one and only Mc Donnalds visit, don't you know, it's all about Mos Burger for fast food burgers! Not a big fan of football so will give the stadium a miss, might go if i'm still after things to do. I'm not even sure what Gyudon is but I know Yoshinoya and i'll order me some of that stuff!

Cheers everyone, keep the suggestions coming in, anyone know some crazy 'only in japan' type things to do?

Going to order my money today and sort our travel insurance followed by a bit of shopping, fun times!
