Only scammed if you insist on bidding above your maximum allowance, do not go above it.

this guy may be pushing the bid up for the seller, maybe its the sellers second account or just a friend, I have seen it a few times, it sucks as you usually end up paying more than what you wanted to, i.e. you bid £50 and it could have ended at £35!

Yeah, but if the buyer is not stupid they will not go above their original top allowance, let the seller 'sell' it to their mate, they will have to pay the fees!

If I suspect this is happening, I stop bidding and let the bastard squirm :)

I reported someone once for 'schill bidding' - where they make a bid to discover your highest bid, then withdraw it, and bid slightly below your price in order to bump the price up so you win the item at your top price. It was happening on just about every auction they put up. The reason for withdrawal each time was 'Bid by mistake' or 'silly wife put big number'. Totally obviously a scam.

Sod all happened from ebay. In fact, when you think about it, it's in ebay's interest for it to happen as they get more fees. If you under the ebay 'help' pages at the action they take, they make it clear that they give you no information about any action they take. It's bollocks really.

Just retract your bid, strawberry float him.

Can you afford to take a no paying bidder alert?
or just try complaining and say to ebay that you think he is schill bidding you.

Don't pay, wait for the strawberry floater to negative feedback you and then put in your feedback that he was running a scam.

Also, I don't know if this is any good, doesn't sound like it's in the best condition but it's all Google would spit up;

It's so obvious, he kept upping the bid at one point by $5. Hopefully, he bids again.

Wait. If he bids again, don't bid anymore, if he doesn't bid again, you get the book for 60$. Surely it's win win for you?

I know for a fact as a seller, you cant leave neg feedback for buyers now, although you may be able to do vice versa still.

Apparently it was to stop retaliatory negative feedback. Say, the buyer leaves bad feedback so the seller does it too.

eBay has been gooseberry fool for years now. I rarely use it, it's too easy to be scammed both as a buyer and a seller. Since everything works in the buyer's favour now (sellers aren't offered much protection), and since the 'regulator' is eBay itself and only has profit in mind, you're buggered if you get conned while selling something.

I seriously can't believe nobody pointed out that it's just username censoring. :fp:
