a misplaced and insecure snobbery about subject matter; whatever
always makes me laugh that nerds will try and pick on other people they think are more nerdy than them

I guess you didn't see the wink then. :fp:

My most read genres are sci fi and fantasy, I've pretty much reached peak nerdiness here! :toot:

Eh? The book was written as a whole. It was only divided into three because the publishers were worried about cost/sales.

Yeah, come on people let's be serious now.

Everyone knows that R.L.Tolkstine originally wrote TLOTR as a 12 part radio play.

On reflection I would like to take back my comment about the film trilogy being much better than the books

It's only really the first film that I really like

I agree with him.

Objectively wrong.

Someone needs to mention to Denster how much plot armour Legolas had and how Gandalf was able to fast travel from the Shire to Isengard while the Hobbits spend ages with a singing homeless drug addict in the woods.

Why didn't they just ride the Eagles to Mordor in the first place?

Those Silmarillion rights may become more accessible now.

This is not really explained in the books or films but I think you can make assumptions why they wouldn't do that when you look into the lore a bit more. It's speculated that they are actually the same type of being that Gandalf is, so they could be potentially corrupted by the ring. We know Gandalf was fearful of the ring because of his own powers.

Then again, it might be a massive flaw in Tolkien's story. I think he saw them as like a Deux ex machina and used them sparingly.

The Eagles would help out every now and then, but they were not horses that could be commanded to fulfil the wishes of men or Elves. They were powerful beings that would be just as easily corrupted by the power of the ring as Gandalf would have.

The whole point of the plan was to send a non-powerful person who would be overlooked by the enemy. Sending Gandalf on the back of a giant eagle would have drawn quite a bit of attention as well as risking setting up a new dark lord.

Interesting.

A TV series based on the wars against Morgoth would be strawberry floating incredible if done correctly. And there is even some sister strawberry floating in there to really draw in the Game of Thrones fans. :datass:

I’m impressed you know about that, Moggy. Unless you just googled Tolkien and Incest.

Eh? I am a massive Tolkien fan, before my GR days I used to hang out on Tolkien forums and even ran one of my own for a bit.
