Interesting that the bases bear the Smash Bros insignia. Thought they'd go for less game specific branding...

I don't have the room for these, I really like the cross game idea though!

I was suggesting to Dala only a few weeks ago that their NFC chip would work really well with this exact idea :slol: Makes perfect sense for adding new fighters and drivers to Smash and MK. Plus, as has been said, kids - and big kids - will lap it up and I've no doubt they'll have high profit margins for Nintendo too. Fair play N, fair play.

I don't know much about this stuff, but between Skylanders and Inifinity, I'd have thought they'd largely missed the boat.

I don't think 2 franchises can be classed as missing the boat.

Couple of questions:

1) They mention Skylanders and Infinity being compatible, does this mean I dont need the port things for each?

2) How are the figurines useful with smash bros? I mean all them characters are already in it?

If you're already obsessed with Infinity and/or Skylanders, is launching this going to pull people in? I don't really see it happening, unless they seriously leverage Pokemon.

Not at all. Sure there are big franchises but Nintendo characters are so recognisable. If Skylanders can make something out of nothing, Nintendo clearly have a space on the market.

No doubt there is a Pokemon game in the works about to use this tech.

Was hoping the trophies would be the size of the Pokemon NFC things, these are massive, bigger than Skylanders.

Nintendo need to scale these down and get them in gashapon machines, for Japan at least. I guess they've done it this way so they can get more money in retail and be seen as figures rather than capsule toys.

As for bringing new characters into games, I don't think that will happen unless they're already hidden away on the disc and act as an unlock. Imagine getting a new statue, going home and the console tells you that you can't use it because you didn't get the software update. This will happen for few without internet connections.

I don't actually understand the point of these figures yet. All I've seen is mention of being able to transfer data between games and consoles. Is that it? Seems a bit pointless.

Got to say, they're pretty detailed. Rumoured to be between $10-$15, also the entire Smash Bros roster are getting figures

Takashi-san and Shigeru Miyamoto explained that there may be alternative ranges of figures for particular releases, for more specialised functionality; future toys could be bigger, too.
Takashi: "We probably won't prepare amiibo for every IP. We haven't finalized which ones we will just yet. It's tough to explain, but if there's something that particularly useful to have a dedicated amiibo for within a particular game, then we will probably create an amiibo line specifically in support of that."
Miyamoto: "So for example, if you look at the Mario amiibo from the Smash Bros. line, it's the Smash Bros. Mario, which is a little bit different from the normal Mario. We'll probably prepare a more standard Mario family line of amiibo characters that includes your typical Mario designs and typical Peach designs. Those figures would be the ones you use with Mario Party 10 or potentially with Mario Kart 8. As for Star Fox, we haven't decided what will happen when you put the Smash Bros. Star Fox amiibo on the GamePad yet, but I do want an Arwing amiibo (laughs).
Takashi: And the other thing is we're not putting any restrictions on size. We can make amiibo in a variety of size ranges. We could make a giant one. We could even make a giant robot amiibo (laughs).

I wonder if there is some movement in them as the Donkey Kong and Yoshi ones look like they have jointed arms.

This amiibo gear is going to ruin my wallet. I'm not even that into Smash Bros but the figures are tempting :fp: . Imagine being a little further down the line when there are new Zelda figures and Metroid figures. Maybe Reggie and Iwata figures  .

It doesn't help that I'm also keen on the new Disney Infinity v2. The first edition didn't attract me at all, but the Marvel figures will be terrific.
