Exactly.

Don’t see the point of watching linear single player games. I’d probably watch like a few minutes of a open world single player game just to see how it looks.

Bizarre statement though as streaming and let’s play has actually done wonders for games that nobody has ever heard about, so there’s plenty of other stuff in the industry that she could have moaned about.

Games like cuphead and PUBG wouldn’t be as successful without the streams.

Kinda seemed to me like her career has stagnated due to some unfortunate decisions out of her control and she’s decided streaming is to blame.

I would have to see hard numbers backing up a decline single player games sales to believe that’s actually happening. In reality, the shift is because the big companies have realised online multiplayer games are far more profitable because they’ve figured out ways to keep making more money from players.

Did you just call one of the best videogame script writers in the industry a pleb?

We're in tallest dwarf territory here.

I don't think this sort of complaint can be levelled when Uncharted is undoubtedly the series she's talking about. Uncharted is amongst the worst offenders in AAA gaming for failing to mix story and gameplay, to a point where the cutscenes and action jar with one another. This quote sums is up:

When you’re spending millions on a story-based game that may not be perceived to have long-term value beyond that one playthrough, the question is, 'Well, why would anybody buy this if they can just watch somebody play it?'

Yes, why would anyone want to play Uncharted after watching it on a steam? They know the story, the gameplay is an irrelevant add on. There is no replay value.

The thing is games are supposed to be interactive. You should give the user a reason to play the game by making the actual game compelling.

I don't personally have any interest in watching someone play something in its entirety when I could be doing it myself in the same timeframe though. I don't see the point in that.

I have pretty much zero interest in watching other people play games. The sole exception being if I am unsure if I should buy a game or not, then I might check out a stream to see if it looks like something I’d enjoy.

But I see nothing wrong with people watching streams if that’s what they like to do. I fail to see how it would result in less sales for the game, unless the game looks strawberry floating boring when somebody else is playing it.

People consume the things that they like across different media. Lord of the Ring fans for instance will have read the books, watched the movies and played the games based on the series. Other than a few weirdos, no fan of Tolkien read the LoTR books and thought “bollocks to watching the movies, I have already read the books!”.

Amy Henning wrote the Soul Reaver games, and did Unchartered when it was good (Druckmann took the lead on UC4 which is why it went super gritty and gooseberry fool). Whatever about Uncharteds gameplay, but Hennig is a fantastic writer. Her work on Soul Reaver alone means she deserves legend status

What? UC4 is the best Uncharted game by a mile. The story got rid of the sci-fi gooseberry fool and the gameplay is actually pretty good.

*edit* The unlockable stuff is pretty cool and actually gives a reason to replay the game. I totally agree with Smurphy about UC 1-3 that there is no reason to replay them. That said, I would imagine that's true of most of the best narrative driven games in video games.

Pretty sure this is why Uncharted has a (very good) multiplayer mode. Plenty of replay value in that!

I also don't agree on the premise that there is no replay value to a game solely about the story. I rewatch films that I like for example.

True, but films are about 2 hours long - i wouldn't want to replay something like a 50hr+ rpg but i replay Rez every now and again because its a short and fun experience.

Yup. I bought UC4, played it, sold it. Same with Horizon. Conversely when TLoU came out I was travelling so I actually watched a full Let's Play of it. I then bought the enhanced edition and still have it.

I guess it depends on how much you enjoy something - there are many films I don't want to sit through again, and many games I have no desire to replay. As a counter point, I replayed TLOU immediately after completing it.
