There was a brilliant feature in PES 6 which allowed two players to face off in an exhibition match, using teams created by the game randomly drawing players from four user selected teams. So you could pick four really strong teams like Milan, Real and Barca, the English top four of the time, and get a random mashup of some of the world's best, or you could take a risk and pick lesser rated teams in the hope their best players or your favourites would be allocated to you. It was a really fun, unique feature that I can't expect took a lot of effort to implement and it'd be great to see it return.

I'd say the same about the Death Race feature on the N64 but for that to happen we would need a new F Zero which doesn't seem forthcoming. If Nintendo have decided outright that the franchise is only now a feature of Mario Kart titles then perhaps the best we can hope for is some sort of Battle Race mode where you select a track and start racing as usual, but there are an indefinite number of laps and the winner is the last person to not get wiped out at all (no blue shells or lightning).

What are some great features, present in games past but not anymore, that you'd like to see return?

I'd like to see the return of objective based mission structures in FPS games ala Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.

Being able to run away from the referee in FIFA if he was going to give you a card.

Being allowed to wander off the beaten path in an FPS without big, flashing letters coming up on screen "commanding" you to return to the combat zone.

I thought Pokemon Sun/Moon were really neat in that Sun followed the system clock and Moon reversed it (so day was night). The main problem with system clock time is when you're limited as to when you can play a game.

Cheats that you can enter with the control pad, rather than having to pay for/buy a lootbox.

This is a good call, but it's not been that long since this was around. Both BioShock 1 and 2 relied on the mechanic.

I should clarify that I meant proper individual missions as well, as opposed to a large adventure type FPS.

I loved the way Perfect Dark 64 tied additional objectives to increases in the difficulty setting, so that you weren't simply less of a bullet sponge, you had more to do. I'd like to see that return, it'd make a nice change from "enemies do more damage lol try not to die."

That's what cheats have effectively become in a lot of instances, microtransactions. Mad when you think about.

Any large publisher: "These microtransactions are availble for people who haven't time to play games properly and want skip to the end with minimum effort"

I'd like to see better game design return. And game design which doesn't hold the player's hand.

They are structured nothing like Perfect Dark or TimeSplitters levels. They're open world for a start

Less "realism" and more "fun".

The past few iterations of WWE games have been unbearably dull with their stamina system and really.. muddy controls, like it's a simulator and not a game. I wish they still let multiple people play as the same person (the Shut Your Mouth (I think) credits showed how fun that could be). They used to be amazing multiplayer games, now they're just tedious when everyone spends three minutes on the floor between punches.

Also local co-op lol classic Halo 5

I'd like the music that plays at the end of a Mario Kart race to match my chosen character, like it did in Super Mario Kart. I loved that detail.
