Hey there! Welcome to the new town!

As the Animal Crossing world expands, I thought it'd be cool to have a place where GRcadians can talk about their love of the games and associated stuff. I'm hoping that we can share our ideas, tips and views on all aspects of the franchise. Whether your're a major fan or you just enjoy dipping in now and again... please join in!

My own background is fairly basic. I've played the DS and 3DS versions of the main game and I've just started on Happy Home Designer, picking up the game and a few amiibo cards. It has been a lot of fun so far; it's certainly different to the other games, but I am enjoying the designing and using the cards to bring characers into the homes!

So... what is your Animal Crossing story?

Played all the main games. Probably played the 3DS one the most but the GameCube one is still my favourite.

Best villagers - Cube, Amelia, Knox 8-)

Woah, I don't see Bob on that list. The objective best villager.

Animal Crossing seemed a good choice for my young daughter to try on her 3ds. I had never experienced an AC game and didn't really get the appeal but I decided to jump in so we could share the journey together.
Literally for a year every day we would spend between 30 and 60 minutes in our towns fishing, growing fruit, buying turnips, bug offs, expanding our homes and towns etc.
My daughter visiting mine and vice versa was fun, exchanging presents, meeting each others town folk, fishing, playing silly games, visiting museums, doing whatever took our fancy.
I was really surprised how much depth the game has and how it became part of our daily routine but it was all shared fun.

We still occasionally visit our towns and lark about, my daughter has also done Happy Home Designer which she enjoyed.

The only other game she enjoys on the same level for her 3ds is Tomodachi Life but that's a big no no for me, I don't see the appeal at all bit like AC was :)

The brief time after New Leaf came out where there was a decent sized community on here playing it was great. I kinda fell out of the routine of playing it without other peoples towns to raid for fruit and stalk market prices though.

The original was a revelation. I poured hours into that game. I remember reading about it in NGC Magazine and it seemed fantastic. Then they gave away a DVD with footage of the game on it and that cemented my decision. It was my first ever import game. I didn't buy a Freeloader as a disc that came free with an issue of CUBE worked as an AC-only Freeloader so I used that (the same disc let me unlock all the characters on F-Zero GX IIRC).

It was hugely engrossing right from the off. I remember the first day I played the game was the day of the Meteor Shower, so as soon as I'd finished working, the whole town ended up at the lake watching the stars and listening to how the music changed. It was a fascinating introduction. For the next few months I must have spent most of my young spare time in the village of Windstil, discovering the secrets of the game.

My brother also started a town on our second memory card and we spent many hours visiting one another's towns, decorating and vandalising the landscapes, defacing villager's faces and lamenting the loss of our favourites to the other's town. We then decided to start from scratch in a combined town... what an error. :-( The new town wasn't the same. And of course we realised just how much depth was available on one disc.

Every new village was totally different, but no town was quite like Windstil. So through the winter months we kept re-building, attempting to stumble across the perfect town. It was only by the time the magic had been and gone, diluted by constant reinvention, that we realised that there's no such thing as a perfect town, but there's never anything quite like your first.

A few months later, in the springtime, we returned to the game and played properly for a while, more to learn the game's innermost secrets than anything else. Turnips were sold, mortgages were cleared, clocks were changed, secret furniture sets amassed. I'd wager I've learnt more about the secrets of AC GC than any other game, ever. If I were to do an Andrew Mills, Animal Crossing would be my game to guide.

Several years later (and several years ago) I went back to the game, starting at the start of the year, totally afresh. By this point I'd learnt of the code generators that allowed you to obtain any item from Nook's but I steered clear of these this time and set out to obtain a legitimate set of furniture map pieces.

I still visit my town from time to time, but I usually get flak for not showing up for X months, or allowing the place to become overgrown. It's a great town and I like it a lot... but it's not quite the same as Windstil. Real life has numbed the feeling somewhat, and I'm very aware it's simply a virtual environment that I'd become disproportionately attached to due to the nature of the game (and just how different it was to every other console game at the time) and the time in my life that I encountered it. But I'd still always advise the same to new players: never leave town, because you can't go back.

That's a great story, Red - it's always good to hear when a game has enabled the family to play and enjoy it :toot: .

You know, Sykes, I've never done the "visiting other folks' towns" thing. It sounds kinda cool but, for some reason, I've not joined in the social side.

That was a terrifc write-up, Dan - and no wonder that we've now seen this appear as your all-time favourite game! Although I have really enjoyed the game on both DS and 3DS, I have never left my starting town... probably a good thing according to your thoughts :) .

You should give it a go if you get the opportunity, it's very surreal the first time you're wandering around a place that seems familiar yet different. Plus there's the fun of nabbing fruit that isn't native to your town to make big bucks, checking out what the other person has done with their town and definitely not leaving loads of pitfalls everywhere to annoy them. :shifty:

I've been hopelessly addicted to the GC and DS games, spending almost a full year playing each one.

I can actually still play them via emulation even using the on screen keyboard due to their sedate nature although the DS version is easier to control using just a mouse (fishing is a bit tricky still, it's weird getting the timing right as there's a slight bit of lag in the emulator I use).

I played the Gamecube one, via freeloader. I remember that special excitement that it was an import game, and at that time it didn't look like it would get a PAL release at all.

Loved it, so much detail, and the music was so perfect - changing every hour through the day and night.

Filling the fossil museum and collecting the fish and bugs was so addictive.

Daisy was definitely the best villager. So cute!

I took a look at the DS one but it felt very similar to the Gamecube one. Is new leaf different enough for me to venture back?

Fishing Tournament today if anyone else wants a reason to play.

Animal Forest was released for the N64 in Japan 15 years ago today. To celebrate this, Nintendo has uploaded a wonderful video that takes you through all the games in the series. It's truly

I first heard about Animal Crossing in NGC magazine as the writers would always lament about how it had never been released in Europe. This was a very strange reality as a PAL version did exist in Australia and I ended up importing a copy after seeing some footage on one of the DVDs that NGC would include with its magazines.

The game itself was inexplicably captivating as, on paper, the idea of completing fetch quests for animals and paying of a virtual mortgage to a raccoon sounds like a curiosity that would be disregarded after a few minutes. Nonetheless, I spent ages trying to get all the museum entries, though I never did this, and keeping my town in order. I even used a second memory card to make a new town and get some new fruit growing in my town :toot:

Despite thoroughly enjoying the GameCUbe game, I never picked up the DS or Wii iterations as I wasn't playing games anywhere near as much and the small time that i did spend on games was split between other Wii games and the 360. This changed with the 3DS as A New Leaf presented a huge leap in the series for me, as I would effectively be going from the GameCube to 3DS game, and my 3DS was my only form of gaming at university, other than my laptop which didn't run much.

Once again, I was completely absorbed by the world of Animal Crossing and racked up over 80 hours of play time within the first couple of months of having the game. Visiting other villages from people on here was great fun, especially laying pitfalls :toot: , and something that I had been looking forward to since the days of the GameCube. The turnip market helped me see more towns as we'd all visit whoever had a great price during the week.

I only stopped playing A New Leaf because I found that I was sinking a lot of time into it and wanted to experience other games. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series that goes back to town management and I had hoped that a Wii U version was in the works when we saw the Animal Crossing Plaza.

Great memories, Dragon - I'd forgotten that the game originally had the 'Forest' name in translation! It is a shame that we haven't seen a proper AC game on the U, more so as the Gamepad could have suited the gameplay style. The Plaza looked cool and it was probably a template for a full game at one time but, instead, Festival lurched into view.

I have only played the DS and 3DS versions to any depth but I love the approach; it's fun to pop into your town and spend as little or as much time as you want on meeting characters, finding secrets and, yes, doing chores!

I recently picked up Happy Home Designer and it has been fun so far. It is nothing like the full AC experience but the characterisation and styling remains strong. However, really it serves to remind us why we would like to see a proper entry in the series.

It's about time I returned to my 3DS town. I'll have a ton of weeding to catch up on!
