The sadness just permeates everything. The loss of his best friend, the self imposed isolation due to the guilt around his friends death and for falling in love his best friends widow. I think the first real smile he has is when he meets Fio, from there I think he starts to accept and deal with the guilt he holds.

i think it's a great film. i'd personally rate it higher than the other you listed

Kiki's Delivery Service is my favourite Ghibli. I actually haven't seen lots of them. It's hard to put the ones I've seen in order as they're all very good -- IIRC the others I've seen are Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, and Howl's Moving Castle. I think Ponyo is the next on my list to watch.

Alright, may as well join in with the full Ghibli+ tier listing

Best

Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Spirited Away
The Castle of Cagliostro

Great

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Grave of the Fireflies
Princess Mononoke
Porco Rosso

Good

Howl's Moving Castle
My Neighbor Totoro
Pom Poko
Tales from Earthsea
Ponyo

Unseen

Only Yesterday
Ocean Waves
Whisper of the Heart
My Neighbours the Yamadas
The Cat Returns
Arrietty
From Up on Poppy Hill
The Wind Rises
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
When Marnie Was There
The Red Turtle
Earwig and the Witch
The Boy and the Heron

Or in other words, I still have lots to watch but I've not seen a Ghibli film I didn't like. That could be a bit of selection bias though!

It's been a very long time since I saw it (I think it was the first Ghibli film I watched). I remember it being very good, but so depressing I have never watched it again so it has faded in my memory!

Never watched Grave. Never will. If I wanted to feel miserable I'd look at the news.

My personal preference for Ghibli is Mononoke for best, then Totoro, then Spirited Away. They're all utter bangers, but my very favourite animated film is Summer Wars. Absolute belter of a film.

Meanwhile my favourite Western animated film is I think Chicken Run. :slol: Take that Pixar!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Nimona
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem

I've only seen the Spider-man films and Mitchells vs The Machines on this list (though I'm keen to see Puss in Boots and TMNT!) but I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.

The default look had got very boring. Spider-Verse was a breath of fresh air and it's great to see more animated films trying new styles.

Bad Guys has quite a fresh style as well, it's almost cel-shaded at times.

The use of computers means Disney animation and Pixar animation have basically converged to the same point. Compare how different Toy Story and Lion King looked to how similar the films all look today.

That is an impressively weird ranking! But nice to see the Ghibli stuff having such variation in people's preference.

My Ghibli List is basically:

Totoro (one of my two favourite films of all time?) > Nausicaa (one of my, I dunno, ten-twenty favourites of all time?) > Lots of other great stuff including Spirited Away's train scene and Mononoke's Eboshi and her relatable but misplaced humanity and the Kaguya's stunning running scene and Whisper of the Heart's Country Road rendition and the surprising allusions to depression and creative frustration in Kiki's and so on and so on > my less favoured ones like Wind Rises (interesting but unexciting) and The Cat Returns (caught half of it once, was not interested in seeking out again).

Other notable anime faves:

Your Name as mentioned by others (the other of my two favourite films of all time!)

Weathering With You (Shinkai's film afterwards - I love it and it gets better on repeat viewings when you get over it not being Your Name, also it might be the most visually beautiful 2D animated film I've ever seen)

Belle (Hosada's latest and though it's not perfect it's gorgeous and full-hearted and ultimately moving - a modern anime Beauty and the Beast)

Satoshi Kon's works (four films, all bangers) - Perfect Blue might be my favourite (and might be my favourite psychological thriller film full stop) but Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress are both fantastic too. Try if you want anime that feels more adult, with thrilling use of cinematic language to explore time/perspective and so on.

The Night Is Young, Walk On Girl - inventive, hilarious and ultimately heart warming - ignore how the art-style looks in stills as in motion this thing sings. I really need to check out some more Yuasa stuff.

Evangelion 2.0 You Cannot Advance - the second film in the four-film Evangelion Rebuild (aka reimagining) series. Worth watching the first to get up to speed just to get to this second one, which has all the tension, excitement and kinetic drama I want out of an anime blockbuster. Some brilliant scenes.

Macross Plus The Movie (compared to the four part-OVA) - if you like Top Gun and like Mechs and like love triangles and like awesome music by Yoko Kanno then this is for you.

Dragon Ball Super: Brolly - if you like Dragonball this not-quite-latest movie has some great 2D (compared to the last movie's foray into CG) fight scenes and animation.

Akira - Obviously! Still so rich and detailed it makes me :O

And I agree with ORKN - the Bebop movie is great (if a little long-winded compared with the series) and some of the action scenes like the train chase are worth the price of entry alone. And any excuse to hang out with the Bebop guys again is a good one.

Non-Anime animated movies:

I think these in general are better known by most. My favourite Pixar is Soul. And another shout out to Across the Spider-Verse which I thought was so good I watched it in the cinema twice. Better than the first for my money.

But also, I have a soft spot for Monster House which I think is an under-rated gem - I like its stop-motion-y look, I like its autumnal classic 80s movie style, and I think its genuinely funny and nicely kid-creepy in places. Worth a try?!

Oh and Anomalisa! That was great. If you like Kaufman's live action stuff (he wrote Eternal Sunshine, he directed I'm Thinking Of Ending Things etc) then this is definitely something to try too!

I concur on Perfect Blue; it's amazing. Haven't seen those other 2, but also loved Kon's Paprika. Inception before Inception!

I often find I prefer animated movies TBH. Animation gives directors so much more creativity than love action often for a fraction of the cost too.

Transformers the movie is my most watched movie of an time. I must have worn out the copy at my video shop as a kid something chronic.

Pixar pushes the envelope with narrative. Inside Out is an obsolete masterpiece. I have a lot of fondness for The Good Dinosaur too.

My favourite Disney movies are never the obvious ones. The Rescuers is a firm favourite from my youth. I still find the girl stuck in the caves harrowing to watch. Atlantis is a heck of an adventure movie made all the better by Michael J Fox. Mulan is much better than any other 'princess' movie they made.

I think back to so many films I enjoyed as a kid I haven't seen in years. An American Tail, A Land Before Time, Robotix, Rockadoodle etc.

There was lovely era in the 1990's when Disney were on the wain and Anastasia, Prince of Egypt, Pebble and the Penguin, Road to El Dorado and Sinbad.

DC's animated output puts it's movie ambitions to shame. Batman: Mask of Phantasm is easily the best outing for the Dark Knight. Flashpoint Paradox did a heck of better job than the recent Flash movie.

It might have bombed at the box office but I really enjoyed Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.

i admire your passion carlos. even if i severely disagree with the notion that disney was on the wain during its renaissance
