Tonight's film was Fern Gully. Have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I had no idea what it was about going into it but it was a fun enough fish out of water story. Tim Curry's Hexxus is the best thing about it. Robin Williams is good but no Genie. I googled the cast and it autocorrected to a rumoured 2024 reboot but that's not happening apparently. It's a shame because I think a (maybe live action) version of this that fleshed out some of the environmental themes could be good. Most depressing thing is watching this thirty years after release and seeing that the rainforest is still strawberry floated.

Around the same time Ferngully came out, there was another similar themed animated film called Once Upon A Forest, I don't remember much about it, but it did star Michael Crawford (I think) and I do remember enjoying it at the time.

It's not a movie I've seen available anywhere in recent years though.

I Lost My Body is a great french animated film on Netflix. Original style and premise!

Also I have a soft spot for Sinbad Legend If The Seven Seas - the music is by Harry Gregson-Williams and the adventurous main theme alone is worth it for me. The actual good adventure and set-pieces seals the deal.

A friend of mine talks up the animation of the main villain

i like to give a shout out to an animated movie i was pleasantly surprised by last year: My Father's Dragon. one of the few netflix original animated movies i've seen but i found myself getting really into it. i'd recommend it although my ranking of ghibli films may have made my opinion not count for anything

i also saw the sea beast, which i think got more buzz, still enjoyable but i couldn't help notice the similarities to how to train your dragon. not a bad thing mind you i just not sure they were trying to hide it

I've never got on with Ghibli movies.

You should all watch Wolfwalkers. It's great.

Interesting - I never seem to get on with Cartoon Saloon's stuff! (only tried Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers and found both meh)

I also didn't get on with the much-touted Kubo - also meh-for-me.

However in the latest Star Wars Visions 2 anthology, Cartoon Saloon's one was pretty great!
