PostRe: Anthem - New IP from Bioware A Team, full reveal at MS conference
by Alvin Flummux » Sun Jun 11, 2017 12:47 am

Could be the fact that it reeks of following the herd, rather than leading it.

I'll reserve judgement for now, but it just doesn't sound or look very exciting to me. When I saw the armor suit, my mind immediately turned to Destiny, and when I saw those snippets of game world, I found myself reminded of both The Last of Us and Fallout 4, not to mention the TV series The 100. I just don't know if it's a great setting, to be honest, but we shall see what tomorrow brings.

Which is rather odd as the reason the game was codenamed Dylan was that they wanted to trailblaze, just like Bob did.

If it's shooter focused, then it can't be all bad. The Frostbite engine is perfect for the pew-pew, and ME:A's combat looks alright. The Division in space? We'll see.

Is this the one the leak said was "BioWare's Destiny"? Reminds me more of... Evolve :dread: (That game by the people who did L4D but which tanked, *hard*.) But it's BioWare and so I'm looking forward to the full reveal regardless.

Graphically stunning, and the gameplay looks fun, but considering this was supposed to reinvent the wheel* it looks similar to way too many games (Destiny, Horizon, Far Cry, The Division).

Also, how much does this totally confirm Andromeda was a straight up B-team game?

*As seen here:
Casey Hudson, executive producer on the main trilogy, would start a new team at BioWare Edmonton to work on a brand new intellectual property, which they gave the code-name Dylan. (That new IP’s code-name, a source said, came because Hudson and team wanted to make the Bob Dylan of video games—one that would be referenced for years to come.)

Anthem reveal was running on Xbox One X right? At least I'll have some eye bleedingly gorgeous visuals coming down the line.

It can be played solo, yes? It has my interest again, but only just.

In addition to the first 2 Mass Effect games, Drew also worked on the original Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate 2, Jade Empire, and The Old Republic MMO.

Casey Hudson has just published a blog post where he speaks in general terms about his return to Bioware and the work on Anthem. Here's a pertinent section:

When I returned to BioWare last summer, Mass Effect: Andromeda had just been released and there was a significant movement among players asking for a story DLC that would answer questions surrounding the fate of the quarians. As you know, we were not able to deliver story DLC for Andromeda—this was as frustrating for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we had to solve in future games.

That experience ultimately became a defining moment in refocusing BioWare’s mission. We need to delight players with new experiences and innovation, but we must stay focused on the importance of the world, character, and storytelling elements that players expect from our games. And our games must be designed to continue delivering new stories and experiences, in an ongoing relationship with players in the worlds we’re evolving together.

It’s in that spirit that we are working through production on Anthem–a game designed to create a whole new world of story and character that you can experience with friends in an ongoing series of adventures. It will be unlike anything you’ve played, but if we do it right, it will feel very distinctly BioWare.

Next time I’ll talk more about how our updated studio mission is helping to focus our work on Anthem and the games that will follow!

Interesting follow-up to this one: he left Bioware (again) just shy of a year after making that post

He later started working on Anthem, a new game developed by Bioware.[9] On March 9, 2018, he announced he would once again be leaving BioWare to work on other things, including more original novels, co-creating a sci-fi graphic novel, and freelance gaming work

Here's hoping his Anthem work was largely complete and will be left untouched.

This game has flop written all over it. I'd be very glad to be proved wrong.

While I'm pretty excited for this I'm just bloody fed-up of games being announced years before they get released.
Also Destiny 2 has somewhat shattered my hopes for the genre as a whole and this needs to be something special to drag me back in.

Soon as it was announced that Drew left, there should be big concerns on where this title goes.

I fear for Bioware.
