Been away for a few days over xmas, came back last night. Got up this morning heating doesn't work. Seriously, wtf can cause heating system to just stop working overnight.

We have a thermostat that kicks in but the boiler doesn't come on, now our hot water has ran out and I refuse to use the electricity to heat up the water tank :x Is there anything I could have done that could have caused this, or is it a job for the experts..

We have a gas boiler and a massive santon water heater upstairs.

Boilers quite new mate, the little spy hole where theres a flame, its gone, pulled the front panel off earlier and there are two symbols, a flame and a flame with a light through it. The latter has a light underneath it, pushed the reset button numerous times, nothing. :(

Lots of things and of course its a job for the experts if you don't know what you are doing.

Seriously, you don't want to be messing about with your boiler unless its something obvious or you know what you are doing.

Have you bled any radiators recently? Most modern combi boilers will shut off if their internal pressure drops below a threshold.

Has the programmer gone funny and can you override it also check the fuseboard that nothing has tripped , if not get a gas engineer out to sort it as you will only strawberry float something up.

That's the obvious thing to try.

Other than that, google the boiler and get a pdf of the instruction manual and find out what the lights are telling you, go through the troubleshooting etc.

After that, it's a job for the experts I'm afraid. You don't want to strawberry float around with it if the simple fixes are not working.

Edit:

You say it's pretty new? Check if it's still under guarantee, you don't want to pay out loads of money if the installers/manufacturers are still liable.

My only other idea was put a jumper on and a second pair of socks but I'm not sure how helpful that is.

Can't you just light a fire under the boiler? That's safe right?

This. Check the pressure on the tank upstairs, it should be at 1 bar.

I forgot to check mine earlier in the year and it shuts the whole heating system down if there is no pressure.

Bleeding rads won't drop the pressure enough especially if it's an F&E system.
Could be the 2/3 port valve.

It's easy to fix, too. Just make sure you have the manual. Wouldn't hurt to check a YouTube video or two featuring your make of boiler.

Google is your friend in these cases. Do what Moggy said and check the instructions out. Go through any simple fixes it suggests and then call whoever installed it if it's still not working.

Had something similar happen to me a few years ago and it turned out it just needed "topped up" to increase the pressure. Was literally a case of turning a small valve on a pipe for five seconds and that was it.

Thanks for the responses guys, pressure is fine, its between 1&2, no switches have tripped, the instructions are sodding useless as there are pretty much no buttons or displays anywhere bar a reset button, its strawberry floating freezing in here, there is someone coming out today as we have home emergency as part of our home insurance. They're taking their time, we've got to go the hospital at 3, which they know and nobody has called yet. Absolutely baffling how it can just go off overnight, the house is only 4 years old ffs.

Gas burners still work so the gas is there...you can hear the boiler trying to fire then it gives up, might be something as simple as a fuse. I hope.

Thanks mate, they should be here soon.
