I was just wondering if anyone has run into any issues with posting YouTube videos and getting copyright hits etc....

I had a video on Youtube up about Fortnite and the crazy lady who wanted it banned because her son wouldn't stop playing it. It had hit 479 views in 5 weeks , straight after it went up ITV hit a copyright wanting any money made from it which is cool as I never monetize my stuff anyways (I used some of there footage of the lady talking so I could then talk and counter it). I have found this morning though that ITV have hit it for a second time and this time they have had it blocked from being viewed altogether... I havent had a video blocked like this in years since Sega had one blocked with Sonic 4 footage in it before it was released, really not sure if I should counter claim under fair use or just let it be.

Just let it be

I thought the monetized thing on youtube wasn't that they'd take any money you make, but that they explicitly put ads on themselves? If that's the case then maybe they hit it again to take it down because that didn't happen?

Not really sure if they take the money youd earn if you monetized it or if they put adds on it or what as well I really don't want to make money myself so have never read half of the stuff relating to all of that, as for me its just a hobby. I just found it weird them suddenly pressing for it to be down after 5 weeks.

I think I am on the side of just letting it be... Maybe I take my bit of talking from the vid and re-edit that so it makes sense and put it up without any of there footage

In the last episode of Modern Life is Goodish (skip to the last part) Dave Gorman talks a little bit about how they're allowed to use various clips for free if they're presented for criticism or review. If you're using their footage of the woman and talking about it it feels like that would count as fair use, but you might need to do a little more research into what ITV actually allow you to use of their footage. It seems like different networks have different policies, which seems a little confusing.

If it's not monetized then you can probably argue the fair use point, but it depends how long you want to spend discussing it.

Youtube is hideously skewed in favour of whoever puts in the copyright claim. There are routes to go down, but you'd have to weigh up if it's worth the time and effort to do so.

If it was just a case of them putting ads on your videos Jim Sterling's copyright block technique is a good idea, but if they're flat out getting the videos blocked/taken down I'm not sure if it works.

It's one reason why I never bothered trying to monetize anything I put up .That and I never got enough hits on anything to make it worthwhile, except on the stuff I made for the GRcade Youtube channel where I think we have made a small amount of money. You'd have to ask Gecko about that though.

If you're not interested in monetising it yourself then add video, picture, sound from other copyright claimers like anything from Nintendo or GTA. They will all try to copyright claim it and because more than one tries to do so nobody is successful.

I've had this in the past when making F1 top 10 videos, F1 Management made it so the vast majority of F1 footage (even recorded by spectators at the tracks) got blocked on copyright grounds which was completely over the top (this is why a lot of F1 fan vids are actually slideshows using still images).

The only other times i've had it has been with PS4 footage, though that has only been on the odd occasion where a licensed song is played during the game (as you get in titles like Watch Dogs 2 when the radio is on etc), and even then it's only de-monetised and not blocked completely.

It's annoying, but there's not really anything that can be done about it for the most part, which is why (apart from PS4 content) i only upload footage i've recorded myself, and only use backing tracks from the YouTube audio library (which eliminates the risk of losing ad revenue).

I have an issue with YouTube in that it's dangerously addicting and I too often feel the sting of guilt and regret of losing a Sunday to endless lists of recommended videos that I don't even care about
