Hmmn, this is really tricky, Devlin!

It's either someone running left holding a bow or a sword or something... or, someone running right wearing a long hat :-).

Jawa pulling out all the stops here.

I'm hoping Dan. will do a vlog dissecting the image and putting forth his theories. I'm sure he will. He's a top bloke.

Super episode, Devlin! I enjoyed that as I knew little about the game; I recall seeing it at arcades and and on computer, but I never actually played it.

These vids have, for me, just the right tone. They give a good overview together with a few real nuggets of info - I never knew about the arcade machine upgrade aspect of this game. Great work!

EDIT: And, dang, I was close with the "hat" aspect but I couldn't get the character :-).

Thanks Jawa.

Taking a break from the sillhoetted characters this week for a game that's not on there.

In other words I hadn't decided what it was going to be (Still in two minds actually). Next weekend guys.

I just watched this because Mr Do! was a favourite of mine, brings back memories of playing it in my local chippy in the early 80s. However, you got the tactics in the game completely wrong. Firstly, the apples are not supposed to be run under in the hope they crush your enemies, you use them skillfully. You dig under them so they drop just one place (do not break) and then push them out to an edge, just enough so they don't topple over. Your enemies (at least in the earlier levels) will then queue up as they can't go any higher because the apple blocks them. When you have enough of them in place, you just push the apple out and squash the whole lot. In the earlier levels you can get most of them with one apple.

Later in the game they will start digging under them, but then you just position them as traps. 3 or 4 will get together, one will start to dig and bring the apple down on the others whilst you are off setting traps elsewhere, collecting cherries or awaiting the letter monster at the top.

Pro players will not eat all of the cherries, they serve a purpose but rarely to clear the level. Firstly, don't just eat a few at a time - eat the set of 8 as this gives a bonus score. Also, the letter monster at the top doesn't just come out randomly it comes out at certain score points - in the earlier levels (say up to 12) you would be looking at getting an extra life every 3 levels (you can even get an extra life every 2 levels if you are good enough).

The last thing you probably didn't encounter (or at least mention in the vid) is the diamond. This was the gamers dream and I think this was totally random. This beauty would turn up from time to time for a very short period of time. If you managed to collect it you would get 8,000 points but more importantly, an extra credit!

Back to school with you!

Mr Do!'s castle was also very good. If Mr Do! is compared to Dig Dug, My Do!'s castle would be compared to Space Panic, but the Mr Do! games being much better to what they were compared to. I did encounter Mr Do!'s wild ride in an arcade, but played it once and couldn't really work out what I was supposed to be doing.

Yeah, it was never meant to be an in-depth guide to the tactics that you can use. Plus I hadn't played in twenty-five years so I'd forgotten most of the tricks and stuff I knew as a kid.

I totally forgot about the diamond when I was recording it as well, though I am aware of it.

That wasn't really my point, my point was more on how the game is supposed to be played. If you forget the tactics, it looks more like a Pac-Man variant where you collect cherries rather than pills, with the cake in the middle replacing the power pill.

Another point about this game for anyone interested in Mr Do! (Ok, just me) was that the original Game Boy port was made by someone who didn't know how to play the game. Looking at it, you would think it was a perfect port. Until you tried to do clever things with the apples (like I mentioned above). In the port, you couldn't move the apples just a bit, it was in one cell or another, meaning it became just a glorified pac-man clone as you couldn't set traps or block a load of the dinosaurs and kill them in one push. Way to ruin a game.

Fair enough. I've never claimed to be particularly good at any of the games I cover, and with Mr Do I played it as I remember playing it a quarter-century ago. There are certainly more advanced ways to play it, yes, but you could say that about most of what I've done. The videos are meant to be a general overview of these titles which showcase something that other people might never have seen before and that they (Or at least I) might find interesting for one reason or another.

Some good tips though. While I did mention that smart use of the enviroment is key, I'd never really considered doing what you suggested with the apples beyond waiting for them to follow me into something. I'll keep it in mind for when I next play it.

BTW, this was not meant to be any criticism of what you've done, just a chance for me to reminisce about a game I used to love in a relevant topic.

That's cool man. Re-reading it back I got a bit overly defensive. It's been a tough day. :D

But yeah, Mr. Do! is strawberry floating awesome.

Just a little teaser for this weeks episode, which I expect to have up tomorrow at some point. I'm editing just now, so I might manage to get it uploaded tonight if I get a run at it.

Haha! Great ending, Devlin!

I enjoyed that. I don't recall seeing the game in an arcade and my only awareness of the title was the Saturn version, which I never played as I had a PlayStation. The graphics having a great chunkiness to them and it looks like being fun.

Another great, bite-size look back, Devlin - cool stuff :toot: .

Cheers man.

Yeah it looks pretty good for a 3D game of that time. Especially when you consider that Virtua Fighter ran on the same S-TV hardware. This looks closer to the Model 2 hardware that powered Daytona, Sega Rally etc.

But it's another game I remember from my local arcade. This was towards the end of the period when I went there and I think I only played it once or twice, but it left an impression.

I'm just annoyed that there's certain games I can't really cover. Specifically anything that used something other than a standard Joystick & Buttons set up. Light Gun games are fine, I can use the mouse at least, but nothing else. Might need to invest in a cheap wheel and pedals.

Good stuff man. :D

The playlist on Youtube automatically adds the newest episode and I aim to get them out each weekend. Currently half-way through the current run of six and I've still got plenty of games to look at.

You should try and do one that would somehow tie into E3, don't ask me what that is, as I don't know.
