Awesome, I saw them at Cardiff last year and they were great, you won't be disappointed! Also, thanks Crimson Clown for those new songs, I particularly like Speaking in Tongues.
My wife went down there to see them at Hyde park with her friends. I would have loved to have gone, but I couldn't get off work and it was a girlie weekend type of deal. She said it was great but remained unimpressed with Beirut. She's seeing Pulp there tomorrow.
Can't believe I'll miss them playing at the castle after the festival. It's just 10 minutes up the road from me as well. I reckon i'm destined to never see this strawberry floating band!
The gig itself was amazing. I was unprepared for how big the whole arena was (I thought it might have just been a stage, and didn't realise they were using it for a festival the day after). There were tonnes of people there and, although we got quite close, we still had to rely on the TV screens to make out the band properly. Also we were stood behind some really annoying individuals at first, but then moved slightly and got a great view.
It was a great day, all in all. The weather was brilliant after the early rain which had been thinking the whole day had gone to pot (my friend couldn't get the day off work, so we had to wait for him to finish at 5 before we went in). As a consequence, we also missed The Vaccines. Was looking forward to them as well.
Mumford and Sons were alright, though their set was a bit weird. They played all their popular anthems bar The Cave all at the start, then went on to some new material and some of their "lesser" songs, all of which were quite slow, repetitive folk ballads which blurred into each other. I felt my own attention wane massively during that point, and I could tell the crowd felt the same somewhat (people were turning around to talk to people, putting their back to the stage).
Arcade Fire were great though. My only niggle is that they didn't play Modern Man or City With No Children (two of my faves from The Suburbs), but I was more than satisfied by the set.
Great gig, all in all.
I'm going to download the Absolute Radio recording of it and listen to it again this week.
It's been odd reading this bumped thread. I was a latecomer to Arcade Fire, despite (or perhaps because of) everyone banging on about them.
But I eventually bought their stuff last summer. The Suburbs is majestic in ways I struggle to describe. Sprawl II: Mountains Beyond Mountains is so euphoric it makes my head hurt.
I would probably shave a couple of songs out of the album as a whole, but otherwise it's a clear 10.
The news of new songs from them is excellent; thanks for drawing to my attention
At the beginning of the year they were selling their Church that they bought for recording in, after finishing the latest album. I think they have a big announcement for 9/9 9pm (canadian time zone?)
