There is something ironic about Sony now getting flak for their lack of support for "cross-play", a term they invented.

If tables were turned would they be anywhere near as customer friendly as they have been this gen? What will Sony do to regain trust if they strawberry float things up next gen? Maybe they'll roll PS Now into PS+ at no extra cost? Bring on the fall!

Square-Enix wanted to bring MMO Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox 360 but Microsoft refused to allow cross-play with PlayStation 3.

Not really a surprise. As soon as any manufacturer thinks they call the shots, they will. When you have a position of dominance you will do whatever you consider necessary to keep it.

The counter to that could be Phil Spencer wasn't in charge back then/they have a different outlook now.

It’s fair enough if they don’t want PS gamers playing against Xbox gamers.

They shouldn’t be holding peoples Fortnight accounts hostage though, that’s just scummy.

I think arrogant Sony have been back for a while. I can only hope Microsoft go all out with backwards compatibility and (in a dream world) free online and force Sony to follow suit.

PS3 emulation is so awkward, as far as I know it still runs like gooseberry fool on PC

It's like most early emulation for a recent system where some things will run really quite nicely, while others just don't.
They'll get there though.

For me the main hurdle is that, as far as I know, you can't download a pre-generated shader cache for each game (Unlike Cemu) which means when you run through a game for the first time it's constantly buffering and stopping to generate and store the shaders as they are needed. Once it's done that it's fine, but it's quite off putting the first time.

So yes it's awkward, which seems to be a hallmark of emulating newer, more powerful systems (PS3 onwards).

I'd really love for PS5 to be able to play 24 years worth of PlayStation games, I feel like some history is being slowly lost due to this.

Obviously with Xbox always using PC architecture it's easier for them, but still th y have to be commended for respecting their gaming heritage by having full BC.

I actually think they would.

Phil Spencer wasn't in charge last time they were the arrogant market leaders.

You only need to watch his interview this year with Jeff to see that he doesn't care what platform people are playing games on, as long as they can play together.

Depends if you take Sony at face value when they said BC was barely used on PS2 and PS3. If, say, 95% of gamers don’t care there’s nothing to gain doing it.

It would cost Sony pence for the PS5, but at least PSone games can still be played on a HD screen via all PS3s should you so desire. The same can’t be said of PS2. I doubt many 60GB machines still work.

I wonder what impact Andrew House and Jack Tretton leaving has.

For me I think as long as they have Mark Cerny leading the hardware division and Shuhei Yoshida leading first party they'll have no problems.

Sony are definitely becoming arrogant and cocky again but so they're delivering so well wth their first party stuff it really doesn't matter. I'd almost go as far as to say they've played they're cards at the wrong time as they could get away when putting out mediocre stuff and still be in a better position than Microsoft with first party exclusives.
