Are the new-gen consoles next-gen enough? Not yet, but they will get there. At present every single PS4 and Xbone game can be run on PS3 and 360 (albeit with lesser graphics). Next-gen games will be titles that can only run on next-gen consoles because of new gameplay and/or additionally significantly better graphics. 2015 will be a great year, ironically I think it will be a PS3 remaster that will show us the potential of next-generation graphics and a cross-gen multiplayer game that will show us the potential of next-generation gameplay.

PS4 is probably just about there.
Xbox I'd have to say no, more like a Nintendo half way house type thing (but more of a three-quarters there than half).

I guess that's a result of selling at a profit than at a loss like we are used to getting.

At the moment, the games aren't there to show any significant enough difference over last-gen. This is not helped by the fact that a lot of the games we have are cross-gen.

The significantly larger amounts of RAM are what will make the real difference over last-gen. Larger, busier more immersive worlds will be the key.

Graphically, only PS4 is. The other two failed to meet my expectations of next-gen graphics/power.

We must be talking about fidelity because there's absolutely nothing the current generation consoles couldn't do gameplay wise.

As such, absolutely...but as usual first party shows a formats strengths.

For instance Watch_Dogs and Battlefield 4 look good enough but they lack any visual spark (I seriously think the FrostBite 3 engine is already looking dated because there's certainly nothing special about Battlefield 4's visual make-up on any platform).

But then I see what developers/gamers did with inFAMOUS: Second Son. I see how far DRIVECLUB has come in the last year (the media released just yesterday is incredible, or, what game matches that right now?). The Order: 1886 is showing how visual drama can be completely seamless (an extension of what Kojima Productions did with Metal Gear Solid 4).

Then I think to myself these are 1st generation PlayStation 4 games. There's so much more to come...and we've seen a hint of what Uncharted 4 could look like in ICE/Naughty Dog's capable hands.

And then I fall back to my default showstoppers, Polyphony Digital. Project CARS looks brilliant and I'm going to be so happy to play that come November but GT7 will be the most gorgeous game. It'll raise the bar.

The PS4 will shine though during the whole generation with an abundance of amazingly technologically savvy developers. So yeah...it's started softly but as the hardware comes to life I'll be continually amazed i.e. definitely 'next-generation' enough.

It's only just begun!

What were you expecting from the Wii U? Mario Kart and 3D World both look incredible and run without any signs of slowing down. Even you were impressed by Mario Kart:

I haven't seen anything on the PS4 or X1 has made me feel like I won't be able to get the same, or better, results from my PC.

For me, it's new experiences that define the arrival of a new generation of kit. Graphics at 1080p, 60 FPS, occlusion-whatever... it's nice but I no longer find that to be particularly exciting.

But there are things that I've really enjoyed from the newer machines:

Wii U - The Gamepad (surfing the net; drawing; messaging); Miiverse (new ways of communicating that have enabled a far more engaging community spirit)
PS4 - Soundbites playing from the controller during Resogun (it was unexpected and it made me smile!)
3DS - Three dimensions (seeing Zelda Ocarina running in 3D was a wow moment back in June 2011)

Already played it on my mate's PS4, graphics were out of this world, glorious 1080p, but I got bored of the actual game.

The jump in fidelity is bound to get exponentially lower each time. Still worth it.

when Gran Turismo 7 does come around, the standard car models that persist from 2004's Gran Turismo 4 will most likely feature.

"I doubt that we'll be throwing away the standard cars," said Yamauchi. "Each car has its own fans. So I think we'll hang on to the archive.

I question how a game with car models from nearly 10 years ago will raise the bar, especially with more forzas, PCars etc on the way.

Gran Turismo hasn't really been impressive graphically since GT3. I can't imagine the next will will change that with what it's up against across PS4 and other platforms.

This. My PS4 still awaits a genuinely impressive game - visually speaking. At the moment I'm plagued by the uneasy knowledge that PC continues to p*ss all over both the new consoles in terms of visuals and this will definitely get more markedly apparent as time goes on, so in that sense alone the consoles will never catch up. So, for me, the question uppermost is 'do I continue to invest in games for the PS4 (I don't have an XBox1) or call it quits (given the outrageous price of PS4 games compared to their PC equivalents: far more money for far less visual performance) and return to PC gaming as my first choice for gaming?

PS4 gaming is in a very precarious position, financially speaking, for me at the moment. On a simple price vs visual performance calculation it loses every time to PC gaming.
