Yes that's right, GRcade's search for it's Master Mario Maker is back!

It's been 5 months since Jazzem took the title in an epic final between himself and Super Dragon 64 and there are some questions to be answered.
Can he defend it?
Will he even show up to defend it?
Who knows.

What I do know is that I am once more seeking a Master Mario Maker.

So what's different this time?
Well I've taken on board some of the criticisms and feedback from the first contest, and came up with a structure that should work quite well.

Participants will be given a brief, with one week to create the level and then a second week to vote for levels. So far, so the same.
The difference is that there will be no eliminations until the very final stages of the contest.
In addition, participants will be split into two groups who will submit levels on alternating weeks.
So Group A will submit on week 1, Group B on week 2 etc. This lets me do results and submissions each week.

Players (And non-players) can vote for both groups. Exact scoring guidelines will be issued once I know exactly how many players we have. Participants MUST submit votes each week.

Once every player has made 8 levels the groups will be split up into two final brackets which will be used to determine the final places. So the top scorers from each group will go into the Upper Bracket, with the lower scorers going into the Lower Bracket. All scores are reset at this point. The Lower bracket then gets to make one more level, with the scores used to determine their positions.

The Upper Bracket also make one level, with the two top scorers going forward to the Grand Final.

One of the benefits of this is that there shouldn't be a situation where someone makes a level, only to be knocked out. This was one of my biggest issues with the first time around and I know it wasn't popular amongst participants either.

Biggest takeaway is that every participant is guaranteed to make at least 9 levels before they can be eliminated. So plenty of time for people to get invested and have some fun.

All events will take place on Sunday. Voting and Submission Deadline at 8pm, Briefs will be given out at 8.30pm, with the Results and Submission showcase taking place at 9pm on Twitch. Levels will be published in the thread once the Results and Submission show has finished.

So to Be Clear...
Week 1 - 1st Brief for Group A given out.
Week 2 - 1st Brief for Group B given out. Group A Submission Deadline
Week 3 - 2nd Brief for Group A given out. Group A Results. Group B Submission Deadline
Week 4 - 2nd Brief for Group B given out. Group B Results. Group A 2nd Submission Deadline
Week 5 - 3rd Brief for Group A given out. Group A Results. Group B 2nd Submission Deadline
etc etc

So let me know if you're up for it!
Can you dethrone Jazzem?
Will The Watching Artist make a stunning return?
Will Pedz ever make Super Pedz Brothers - Special World?
Let me know in the thread if you are IN!

I'm looking to issue the first guidelines either this weekend or next weekend, we'll see how quickly sign-ups go. I'm going to need at least 8 makers for this to go ahead.

The Guidelines
Mushroom Group
Week 1

Image
So to start off with, I thought we'd do something to ease us back into the flow of level making. In addition it gives the newer participants a chance to get used to working within some simple guidelines.

With that in mind this weeks task will be fairly straight forward.

You are to create a level in the Super Mario Bros style. This should be an attempt at a mid-game level. So not so easy it's boring, but not so hard it takes multiple attempts to complete. Can you get the balance right?
You may use anything shown in the image below.

Image

In addition to this, you can use all the Super Mario Bros styles, EXCEPT for Airship and Ghost House.

You MAY use checkpoints.
You MAY use Super-Sized enemies.

You will have until 8pm Sunday 14th of August to submit your level to me via PM.
PM's should be titled AYAMM - Mushroom Group Submission
You should include:
- The name of the level
- The Code for the level
- A link to the level on the Super Mario Maker Bookmark site

Do NOT post your level in the thread. All levels will be released by me once they are all submitted. Obviously people can play your levels as soon as you upload them, but I'm asking for participants to please refrain from this.

I will also say that Flower Group will not necessarily be getting the same guidelines next week.

So once more, good luck to everyone and lets see some fantastic levels!

Week 2

Image
Well Week 1 went more or less to plan.

Apart from the Thwomps.... So in order to make the most of it, this week I want you to centre your levels around Thwomps. More specifically I'd like to see interesting uses of them. Play around with them, see what you can do with them and give me something fun to play.

You can use any items to make the levels.
You can use any of the four game styles and you can use any of the level types.

Week 3

Image
Something I've never even touched on with this contest so far is Time Limits.

Some of the most thrilling moments in Super Mario are when you're battling against the clock to make it through a tricky level in time.

With that in mind your challenge for this week is to make a level with a time limit of 100 seconds. This should be a level where precise platforming, quick decision making and slit-second reactions can make all the difference. As usual you may use any Mario game style you like, however you may not use Underwater, Airship or Ghost house tilesets.

Beyond that you have no restrictions. Better get a move on, times-a-ticking!

Week 4

Image
This weeks challenge for Mushroom group is to make use of two of the power-ups available to Mario in Super Mario Bros 3. The Kuribo-Shoe and the Leaf.

The level must make use of both items, at least one of which MUST be essential to completion. Ideally I'd like to see some clever use of the shoe, as it's not a very common item within Mario Maker.

Naturally this level must be made in Super Mario Bros 3. There are no restrictions on anything else.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Week 5

Image
It's the return of another of the rounds from the last competition!

As it was back then, your challenge is to create a level around any Mystery Mushroom character you have access to.
These characters can be unlocked with amiibo, completing 100 Mario Challenge and by completing the Event levels that have been released.
The level you create should try and fit the character you use as much as possible.

Only Super Mario Bros style levels may be used.
Other than that you have no restrictions on what blocks, items or level types you may use.

Good luck guys!

Woo Hoo!

Week 6

Apologies for the delay. No picture just now guys. Not had a chance to make one up and I'm out tonight.

Anyway...

Your challenge this week revolves around Ghost Houses and Airships.

Two of the most iconic types of Mario level, each has a distinct style of gameplay.

You need to pick one of these level types and craft the best level you can.

Ghost Houses must be in the Super Mario World style, while Airships should be Super Mario Bros 3 style.

Other than that you have no restrictions or limits.

Have fun.

Week 7

Image
Here we are then at the penultimate level for Mushroom Group.

Only two levels remain to determine your places in the final weeks!

With that in mind here are your guidelines for week 7.

I want you to create a level that makes good use of the Red Coins. What you do with those coins is up to yourself. It can be a hunt for each of them, a series of tricky platforming tests or anything else you can come up with. The coins must be essential to progress however.

There are no restrictions on which Mario game you use, or which level type. You can use any and all blocks, items and enemies.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Flower Group
Week 1

Image

Just like Mushroom Group, I thought we'd do something to ease us back into the flow of level making. In addition it gives the newer participants a chance to get used to working within some simple guidelines.

With that in mind this weeks task will be fairly straight forward.

You are to create a level in the Super Mario Bros 3 style. This should be an attempt at a mid-game level. So not so easy it's boring, but not so hard it takes multiple attempts to complete. Can you get the balance right?
You may use anything shown in the image below.

Image
In addition to this, you can use all the Super Mario Bros 3 styles, EXCEPT for Ghost House.

You MAY use checkpoints.
You MAY use Super-Sized enemies.

You will have until 8pm Sunday 21st of August to submit your level to me via PM.
PM's should be titled AYAMM - Flower Group Submission
You should include:
- The name of the level
- The Code for the level
- A link to the level on the Super Mario Maker Bookmark site

Do NOT post your level in the thread. All levels will be released by me once they are all submitted. Obviously people can play your levels as soon as you upload them, but I'm asking for participants to please refrain from this.

This will be the only time where guidelines are similar. Going forward each group can expect drastically different types of level to be required.

So once more, good luck to everyone and lets see some fantastic levels!

Week 2

Image

Well, Flower Group it's time to turn it up a notch.

Week 1, was the easy stuff, now I'm looking for something far more clever.

Your challenge this week, is to make a level entirely on ONE SCREEN. That means no scrolling, no pipes. The only scrolling I will accept is the scrolling the game automatically does to centre on Mario. You should be able to see the entire level from the moment it starts (Including the exit). Doors are allowed, but again, you cannot move Mario away from the starting area.

Now what you do with this one screen level is up to you. It can be a puzzle, a race against time, a quick test of skill or something else entirely.
You may use any game style, and any level type.

This is probably one of the tougher challenges I've set, so it's going to take some thinking to come up with something worthy of coming top.

Have fun!

Week 3

Image
That's right Flower Group it's the return of one of my favourite levels from the last time around. Yoshi levels!

While last time it was about Super Mario World specifically, this time around I only care about Yoshi.

You can use either Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros. Yoshi must be an integral part of the level, essential to completion. You can do anything you like with him and there are no restrictions on anything else. I'm looking for interesting uses of him, so see if you can surprise me. 8-)

After the One Screen Wonder I wanted to give you all something a little less constraining.

Week 4

Image
Last time we had an autoscroller week, this time we're having a water level week. :dread:

Flower Group, your challenge this week is to create a good water level. This is the hardest challenge I've set so far, simply because water levels are almost universally shite.

This another week light on restrictions. You may use any game style and any enemies/items that you wish. The level may contain non-water sections, but the vast majority of the level should be water based.

As usual, levels are due in by 8pm Sunday 2nd of October.

Week 5

Image
Yes it's another returning challenge from the last contest!

This time around Flower Group are challenged to come up with the very best Boss Battle they can.
You can have several mini-bosses, or one big challenge, but the idea is to do something a bit more interesting than just jumping over Bowser and hitting the goal.

As with last time, while Bowser and Bowser Jr are pre-made for this kind of challenge, I will accept boss fights based around other enemies, with the caveat attached that it has to FEEL like a boss fight. Jazzem's infamous Magikoopa shows both the potential and the pitfalls of this approach. But it is an option available to you. Take it at your own risk.

ALL styles and level types are available to you, with no restrictions on items, enemies or blocks.

Good luck guys!

Week 6

Image

So this weeks challenge for Flower Group is to build a level around the mechanics introduced in New Super Mario Bros.

Walljumps are an essential tool in that game, and as such your level must need Walljumps to be completed.

The trick will be judging just how hard you want to make your level.

Naturally the level has to be in the New Super Mario Bros style, though you can include any and all items, weapons and block types at your disposal.

As usual you have until Sunday at 8pm to submit your levels!

Have fun!

Week 7

Image#
I love shmups!

This week your task it to make a level themed around using the koopa clown car to create a shmup level. Can you make a great shooter?

You can use any Game skin and any level type. All items, enemies and blocks are allowed.

Have fun guys.

Quarter-Finals
Image
Quarter-Finalists be of good cheer!

Having successfully navigated your way through the previous 8 group stages there are now two further spots up for grabs in the Semi-Finals.

Your challenge is to make a Christmas themed level.
However shall you do it? Well that's entirely up to yourselves. You can use any of the Game Styles and any of the Level Types, but there must be a very definite festive theme.
Beyond that I have no restrictions on what you do.

You have until 8pm on Sunday December 11th to get your levels submitted to me.
Then we'll find out whose been naughty and nice.

Have fun gentlemen.

Semi-Finals
Image
And so we reach our penultimate round. From here two Mario Makers will progress to the Grand Final, while four of you shall fade into the night, destined to wait for your next shot.

The Semi-Final guidelines are quite simple. I want a "Runner" style of level.

One of my favourite types of platform levels, are the ones where the character is constantly in motion. There should be no dawdling, or waiting around. The idea is that you hit run and just keep on going until you reach the end. It should feel epic. It should give you a rush to get through. You should have jumps that require you to hit the right spot at the right time and to keep going. You CAN have Mario change direction, but the aim of the level is to keep him going fast, so make sure you take that into account. There is no restriction to certain games or level types, but with the expanded moveset available, New Super Mario Bros might be helpful.

The key to this challenge will be to get your level of difficulty just right. Too hard and you run the risk of frustrating the players. Too easy, and well, where's the fun in that?

You have TWO WEEKS to get these levels made and submitted. All Makers must have their levels submitted to myself no later than 8pm on Sunday the 1st of January.

Have fun guys and have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it comes.
:toot: :toot:

The Rules
- All levels must be created for the contest. You may not submit a level you have already designed.
- No Remakes, Remixes or Ports of levels from other games or creators. They must be entirely your own work.
- Guidelines issued must be stuck to. There will be penalties for not sticking to the guidelines.
- Levels must be submitted before the 8pm Sunday deadline. Any levels not received by this time will be considered a Non-Submittal and receive a 0 score for the week. I'm not unfair though. If you have a reason for late-submission PM me BEFORE the deadline to let me know and I may grant an extension up to 10pm.
- All participants who have levels eligible to be voted for in a given week MUST vote. Anyone who fails to submit votes will have their points for that week nullified and receive a 0 score.
- Any decisions or rulings made by myself are final.
- Have FUN! Anyone caught not having fun will be immediately eliminated and be mercilessly mocked on the stream for being a boring bastard.

Glad to see this back. I've not touched Mario Maker in ages. I want to say yes. Just worried I wont have the time to do it justice. We shall see.

The benefit of the way it works this time around is that if you miss a week, it's not necessarily the end of the competition for you. It's about building up your points over the course of 8 levels. Obviously if you miss some then it makes it harder, but it's not a straight up "You're done" like it was last time.

Good stuff man.

Once I get home I'm gonna pm some of the players who have turned up since we finished. So Dig Dug, Axl and any others that were in the main MM thread. Try and get some new blood in the game.

I was totally impressed with the last competition and I like the idea that folk won't be kicked out after the first week or whatever! Just checking, Devlin: I haven't unlocked *everything* in the game; would that pose any barriers to joining in?

Oh, and yeah... my levels will be pretty easy, obvs  .

It might be with doing some Mario Maker streams in the lead up to week one to get viewers to sign up. They seemed keen to have Devlin and Pedz play their levels so they might like some friendly competition.

You'll probably be ok at the start but you'll want everything at your disposal at some point. You should have everything unlocked after playing the game on nine separate days.
