It was "special" enough to make the entire Xbox platform viable, without it I doubt there would even be a 360 now. As a new franchise it also managed to sell millions of copies ( and machines) as well as receiving universal critical acclaim including the only Edge [10] of that console generation.
HaloCE was the best SP, and Halo2 the best MP. Halo3 is unfortuantley coming in somewhere in between for both SP and MP.
I am very dissapointed at the lack of support Malo3 MP is getting by bungie / MS. Compare that with gears of war 2 - 5 older maps relaes from day one, followed by an extra 3 then 4 maps, with another 7 maps coming in the summer. That's 19 extra maps plus a bit more SP content within a year. By comparison the support for Halo3 is quite poor. They really should release about 7 Halo2 maps for free to catch up.

I still say that Halo CE is the best game ever.
Surely the fact that Halo 3 MP actually works online makes it better than GoW 2?
