The first Halo game is one of the best games ever made and has gone on to something approaching iconic status. Its greatness is established in my mind by the fact that, as a FPS, it just plays better than anything else out there. In terms of balance (two weapon system and regenerating health), still brilliant enemy a.i, and the sheer variety of the action (on foot and vehicle 3 way battles), it really was a special game.

Halo 2's single player felt a little lost by comparison. Whilst the core gameplay was still there, the levels didn't have the same epic feel and the story tried to tell too much at once. The MP on the other hand was as good as anything that had ever been played online.

Halo 3 found itself in a rather invidious position therefore. Sandwiched between those people who were just going to hate the game no matter what (I've yet to see a game series generate so much hate from those who profess to have little interest in it) and those who wanted Halo:CE mark II. In the end I think they delivered the game of the generation thus far with perhaps only Galaxy having reached the same level of greatness for me. Barring the Cortana level it was an epic single player that, for me, really shows up the likes of Resistance et al as also-rans.

So yeah, I'd say I'm a rather big fan of the series.

I think people who where dissapointed with Halo3's single player should go back and give it another go. After the hype has now died down its a pretty damn fine FPS, only second to Half-Life Ep2 by the tiniest of margins.

Nope. I played the first one for a few hours, but then gave up with it. It was alright at first, but got boring very quickly. Anyway, I thought I'd skip 2 and try 3, which I didn't like either. SP was extremely dull, and the MP isn't that much better. (It is better with friends, I admit)
However, I'm not an FPS fan anyway (apart from CoD 4  ), but it seemed very average to me.

Always thought of that as a downer, personally. I can see where it aids in realism and other assorted bollocks, but to me realism went out the window the moment I booted the thing up. Bloody hate it when shooters do that now, probably the catalyst for why I no longer get on with shooters.

Dumbed down trash for the lowest common denominator.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Combat Evolved is still to this day the finest shooter I've ever played.

Do you have to be so dismissive of everything that's not built for the all powerful PC? You moan about people talking bollocks in PC topics and you come out with this which is just as bad if not worse than what you complain about.

Yes love the series. First is the best and one of my all time favourites. Memories of playing the beach level for the first time will stay with me forever. Great stuff and showed what a console FPS could do. 2&3 never reached the heights of the first but still are great games.

It's cocktail time!. Then again when isn't it.

I don't moan about people talking bollocks, I correct them when they make a mistake such as "you need a million pound PC to play a source engine game".

In this case I firmly believe Halo to be dumbed trash for the lowest common denominator and one of the best examples of consolisation.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Peter, directly after Winckle's post is this one, which says roughly the same thing:

Why in the name of almighty strawberry float are you pissing and whinging at Winckle while ignoring everyone else with a similar opinion? :|

Halo 1 is one of the finest FPS games ever, and as usual you missed the point! (I wonder if your tone will change when you guys finally get Halo 3 on PC!)

On-topic, I played the original Halo a couple of times and didn't enjoy it very much.

Then even though I know it's just your opinion I'm going to say you have that completely wrong. PC FPS have nothing radically better than Halo and I've played a fair few on PC. The controls are different as they have to be to work on the pad but it's no more dumbed down than most if not all PC FPS.
Even Crysis which made a lot of PC owners wet themselves over is nothing special apart from the visuals if you ask me.

Mainly because it's a huge difference from calling something "Dumbed down for the Masses" to "overhyped". If you didn't go so defensive every time I say anything even mildly negative to you or Winckle it might also help.

You yourself say you played it and didn't get on with it and that's fine I have no problem with that but to make sweeping statements is what you guys are always moaning about in the PC topics so can't you see my point even a little?

You've come into a thread, saw a list of opinions, picked out Winckle's and gone, "strawberry float Winckle having an opinion on a console game, gonna put a stop to this!!"

You then, rather than arguing against it, just implied he was talking bollocks. Sterling work there, Moderator Crisp. Why don't you say why you like Halo so much rather than trying to rubbish individual posts based purely on who made them?
