PostAre you overweight? Does this game offend you?

I had heard of Fat Princess before, if anything I think it sounds original and funny. (It's going to be a downloadable game on the PSN store).

Here, a feminist has written a letter of complaint about Fat Princess. She describes fat women as:
...unlovable human garbage at whom any sensible bloke would sooner hurl invective than cast a longing glance.

:fp:

Yet, she claims this game will promote "a new generation of fat-hating". (Despite, y'know, the aim of the game being to rescue the princess, regardless of her weight)
From the above quote she seems to hate fat women anyway. But, the responses from other women under her post are absolutely infuriating.
"Well, thank you Sony for helping me finally make a decision that has plagued me for months. Oh, and Microsoft thanks you, too...or maybe Nintendo...I haven't decided yet ; )"

Wait a second. They think Princess Peach is A-OK? Ivy? [insert back-catalogue of generic female characters*, exluding the amazing women of MGS, because, apparantly, all things Sony are a no-go now].

Then I read this from Destructiod: Feminists sh*t all over Fat Princess, real people laugh , along with almost all 176 comments as they were so amusing.

In all fairness, here is the aforementioned womans' response, not as embarrasing as the first read where she seems to completely miss a few points:

It's a game.
It's a game that includes a fat woman, for once.
It's a game where up to 32 players are in fierce competition to rescue the Fat Princess first. That's one sought-after girl, she's in bigger demand than Princess Peach!
And finally, the site's url contains "Shakespeares Sister", a truly awesome duo whom I love, instead of being treated with their uber-coolness:

I see this:

So what do you guys think? Does this game offend you? Would it no longer be offensive if the princess was thin, or if the aim was to rescue a prince?
And thank you, if you managed to read all that!
*I want to point out I've got no gripe with these characters, and they obviously aren't all generic, I was just trying to make a point.

Princess Peach is awesome.

To put even more of a downer on those who hate the PS3 Game of Whatever Year It Comes Out that the princess IS thin to begin with. It's just that to stop her escaping, the kidnappers have fed her and made her fat so she can't run away.

One you rescue the princess, then it's assumable that'll she go on a diet and slim herself back down a bit. You might be able to keep feeding the princess and cause her to explode too. Which I'm sure is going to give "fat-haters" a brand new plan of attack.

She's being sarky, Em.

It's just a bit of fun, isn't it? The point is that the princess is difficult to carry when she's fat. She starts off fairly normal-sized, but if you feed her with cake, she gets much bigger. It's actually a useful tool against obesity, I think - given that it shows what happens if you shovel unhealthy food down your neck.

I know, I just don't think 'sarky' is the route to go down if someone wants to be taken seriously.

That's what I think. I can't really talk because I got so riled up with what I read, but the game just looks fun, and something really different. They're taking it far too seriously. Like I said I probably can't talk as I must be taking it too seriously, too!

I can put myself in the overwieght/morbid catagory, and i am not personally ashamed of that, neither am i offended by this game, it would be hypocrytical for someone like me to come out guns blazing over something so petty like this, when the game is not the problem, its people like the ranter emily posted about, she obviously has image problems and thinks the game is innopropriat.

Either way i find it hard to get offended by a medium, whether its film, music or games, i take it for what it is, a piece of work, the only way i would get offended is if it was a personal attack on myself.

like the Jigger_Jay eatorama coming soon for nintendo wii.

I would post more opinions but i am off to a KKK meeting.

This is like going back to the Mass Effect debate. The people against this have no idea what the game is about or what they're complaining for. In the end they just look like idiots at the hands of one GEOFF KEIGHLEY.

I think a lot of it depends on the details and the context of the game. Like, is the princess presented as cute-fat, or disgusting-fat? At the end of a round, does she thin out into a sexy princesss while the troops are cheering? It's those kinds of things that make the difference - and from what I've seen I lean towards the game being fairly OK. It wouldn't come under this much scrutiny in the first place if it weren't for the invisibility in games of overweight people generally but women especially.

I have to say I don't think it's terribly useful asking a bunch of guys about this just because the reactions of society & people towards overweight men and overweight women are very, very different. Just like the online games-media coverage, I expect a mixture of aggression, giggling, and bitterly ironic lectures on what feminism should be about.

I also guarantee that posting that picture of McEwan will de-rail this thread. A picture of an unattractive woman just cannot pass un-commented on.
