...I should have added that backwards-compatibility will be a big attraction for me next time around. MS currently seem to be in the driving seat on that front and I hope that Sony enable their new kit to run PS4 titles.

Yep BC is a biggy for me after the brilliance of BC on Xbox. IF I were to indulge in a new PlayStation console then it would absolutely have to allow me to transfer across all my PS4 games and peripherals as well as hint at some kind of BC from previous PS generations during the consoles lifetime. If not, and they instead opt for the standard 'hit the reset button and start all over again' approach, then PS5 won't really be something I'd be interested in.

PS4 and Xbox One still have plenty more to give, Sony in particular has plenty of brilliant games to look forward to.
Late 2020/2021 is when I can honestly see next gen, anything earlier will be too soon.

To do the sort of performance people wont bitch about the things will cost a bloody fortune so I can't see it happening any time soon as it just wont be affordable for the masses and so will reduce sales.

No, a few reasons

- The tech for a next-gen leap won't be available for mass production until 2020

- Too many big games coming over the next couple of years (God of War, Spiderman, Red Dead 2, Dreams, Days Gone, Kingdom Hearts 3, FFVII, Left Alive, Last of Us 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, Resi 2 Remake and whatever's unveiled at E3)

- Current gen started very slowly, I didn't get a PS4 until late 2014 for MGS V and Bloodborne, next-gen will probably start similarly

2020 would be alright. Presumably consoles will continue with the iterative upgrades in the same way most other tech does now but in 3-4 year increments. I'm happy with that as long as games being backwards compatible is just a thing from here on out.

I'm sure it will be on both platforms albeit Xbox will have a far larger selection.

This is a problem for me, do I buy a PS5 Xbox 2 on launch, or do I wait and see if they do the upgrade shite and buy one then? OR do I say strawberry float you upgrades and buy neither and bin console gaming? Hmmm...

I'll probably end up going for a base PS5 and then getting the Xbox Two X when (and If I suppose) it comes. That's what I've done this time and it's worked out quite well.

That's assuming PS5 is what I go with to start out though. If Xbox has enough interesting exclusives coming, I'll probably go there first. But I'm not-entirely confident that Microsoft can fix their exclusives problem out in time for Xbox Two.

I have absolutely no idea how this stuff works but was under the impression that modern consoles are effectively PC's so newer consoles will be able to play everything that's been released during the X1 PS4 generation. BC of 360 and OG Xbox games is a result of clever software and nothing to do wth the hardware.

Again, I know nothing about the intricacies of computing so this could be complete bollocks.

A main factor for me is where my friends are. If all the GRCade crew who currently play on PS4 migrate to Xbox 2 then so will I.
I could get back into PC gaming but it's been so long now I'm completely bamboozled by CPU and GPU choices and from all accounts Steam has become a bit of a minefield.

They are essentially X86 PCs with some custom architecture so BC shouldn't be outwith the capabilities of the next-gen.

Will Sony have to bin that game streaming service then?

No, PS Now also has PS4 games available for streaming.

The service is being geared up as a potential console substitute in the long term.

So will that negate actual back compat for the PS5 if they believe in the streaming service?

Indeed, BC between on XB2 (of XB1) titles will be a lot easier than getting XB and XB360 titles to run on XB1.

PS4 games on PS5 will be the same, BC with PS3 titles will remain tricky due to PS3's complex Cell architecture.

That being the case means upgrading is analogous to the phone upgrade in that you get something a bit prettier wth nicer graphics, more memory and some new bells and whistles. I'm good with that.

Nope, they'll be going with X86 again next time (according to developer leaks) so running PS4 games on PS5 will be a doddle, in fact I don't think emulation would be required, the games should just be able to run natively.

Getting anything other than a PS3 to run PS3 games was always a problem as Cell was too complex and tricky to emulate.
