The rumour mill is slowly starting to turn with rumours of PS5 and "Xbox Two's" specs and launches making headlines (most of which point to a late 2020 releases)

However, other than Peter Crisp's impatience, there doesn't seem to be much excitement at the moment.

5 or 6 years into last-gen people seemed to be crying out for new systems with games exhibiting choppy frame-rates and screen-tearing while PC seemed to be the only way to escape this.

5 years into this generation it doesn't seem to be there, most people seem happy with their current systems in terms of performance with PS4 and Xbox One showing no signs of slowing down in terms of sales and, for those who aren't satisfied, there's PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

For me, it seems that the best is still to come this gen, Last of Us 2, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima and Resident Evil 2 Remake look better than anything currently available and run well too (Resi 2 running at 60fps).

This might change at GDC 2019 and E3 2019 where we might get small glimpses of what next-gen tech is capable of, but with Xbox One X currently retailing at £399.99 it's hard to imagine significant boosts over current-gen being affordable any time soon.

Nope. Mainly playing on PC and Switch.

The former is never out of date and my current specs still have plenty of life in them, and the latter is still a young format with lots to come. :toot:

In all honesty I had expected to have picked up an XBox One and/or a PS4 by now but they seem to have held their price way too long compared to previous generations. 5 years into the PS2 generation I'm pretty sure you were picking one up for not much over £100.

The fact that there are some really, really impressive looking games coming in the last couple of years of this gen are certainly helping things.
I'm fairly confident if the multiplayer for Last of Us 2 is somewhere near the level of the first game the GRCade group we had playing the first game will return and we'll be playing that well into the next gen as not everyone will upgrade.

I don't think I play my PS4 enough these days to warrant spending hundreds of pounds on a PS5. The convenience of the Switch has made it my go-to gaming platform this year. If they released a decent version of FIFA on it that'd probably see my PS4 collect dust.

I'm quiet happy with all 3 current consoles, it's seldom the graphics that sell me a game anyways it's the ideas I'd sooner see fresh ideas than fresh hardware.

Yeah remember playing Last of Us multiplayer long into this gen with you and Fadecy.

I'll no doubt buy a nex-gen console, but like you say, with the impressive looking games coming out I'd prefer Sony and Microsoft to wait until a huge jump in performance is affordable.

I really want next-gen to be capable of pulling off close to photo-realistic looking games which, apparently, would require a GPU capable of 40 TFLOPs

I’m happy for them to release them in the next couple of years, but I expect I’ll be late joining the next gen.

If they had backwards compatibility then I'd be ready for PS5/Xbox Two Two
Otherwise I can wait.

As I said recently in another thread, I'll likely jump in day one if there's backwards compatibility and Game Pass at launch.

Backwards compatibility is also a big deciding point for me, if PS5 will allow me to play all my PS4 games then i’ll likely join early.

I have more confidence in MS having full BC in Xbox Two than I have in Sony bringing it to PS5

This.

The Xbox One and PS4 barely get turned on these days, next gen I doubt I'll get either of them. The only genre I'd feel like I'd be missing out on is the more sim oriented racing games but I'd like to think/hope the second iteration of the Switch would be powerful enough to get some racing sims. I just hope Nintendo keep on with the format of the Switch for their next gen console, it's really hit the sweet spot in my opinion.

This will be my last generation I think. I have an Xbox One I never touch.

I have a Switch I only use when I'm away from home.

Games in general aren't something I'm excited about anymore. I wouldn't say I've outgrown them, but I don't have the time to play them over work and other things like cooking, socialising and exercising. Shift work doesn't help either. When i do play games I normally play old ones.

Breath of the Wild and Resi 7 being the only exceptions of late.

What I'd really really love is a re-re-make of Skies of Arcadia.

Can’t say I’m excited yet. I want to be playing Cyberpunk at its highest level, as well as Death Stranding but even then, I’m more interested in the games themselves.

Sony has been poor with legacy software, do I want to be playing many PS4 games next gen? Not really but it’s a nice feature to have.

The graphics are great on the current machines so I'd be quite happy for a good few years yet. How much better are the graphics really going to be? I mean we still get pop up in games and probably will in the next generation.

Anyway,no backwards compatibility on ps5 and I'm out until something truly inspiring releases on it.

I think they are going to have to show some real improvements to convince people like you who feel this gen is fine already.
I think the main improvement will be that 4K 60fps will finally be standard (I don't think ray tracing will even be considered as the machines just won't have the horsepower) and AI and physics will see big upgrades.

If the recent talk about the new AMD hardware is right then the upgrade could be pretty decent.

No.

If it did come out sooner than expected I'll not buy them until late anyway, but right now I have no money nor space for another console.

If BC is there though it'll be easy purchase (well a year after) but overall I end up playing older games than current so eh
