We knocked up quite a decent discussion on Richard Dawkins... so lets see how this goes. Do you consider yourself religious? Do you think there is a God? Do you believe religion has a place in our modern world? Share your thoughts. And stuff.

Pastafarian? Italian variant on the Jamaican favourite?

I'd class myself as atheist, but I find labelling a group based on it's refusal to believe in any of the other groups a bit odd. All other religious groups are unified by their respective belief system, whereas atheists are lumped together based on a lack of common belief. I suppose it becomes necessary to have a name for it, but it does lead to an odd grouping.

I believe there is something... bigger than us, but I'm not so sure God is that something. I mean, if God is really this all-loving being then why does he inflict cancer on people? Why does he force good people to endure ridiculous hardships?

This requires far more thinking time than I can give right now.

I tend to flip-flop between atheist and Humanist. No belief in god(s) whatsoever.

I don't believe there is a god - makes no sense whatsover. I don't believe there is a heaven or a hell. I do believe that people need a 'spiritual' dimension to their lives - whatever that means - its natural - Richard Hawkins may deny it but I think it is actually a product of evolution - a need to have / invent some meaning / reason.

The closest I get to a religion is the 'philosophy' of zen buddhism.

On the other hand - we could just rape and kill each other in a purely anarchist manner until there is very few of us left ! :D

I'm not religious so don't believe in God. But I won't be arragont enough to completely dismiss the idea of their being something bigger than us, or an all mighty power or whatever. The fact is I doubt there is anyway to know for sure whether there is or there isn't, so I don't ever get into debates about it, nor mock people who believe in a higher power. (unless they are complete nutters who take religion too far)

I think it's better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier.

Good Lord, so you can. I'm just so used to using the neutered version that was running on PG.

Religion means hope. Simple as. Religious people, have something to hope for, something to aim for, something that helps keep them going during the bad times, and something to thank during the good. Whether this "something" is real is completely different. God may not be "real" in the sense of an actual being, but he is "real" in the sense of living inside of many Christians, compelling some of them to do what they believe is good.

I personally am constantly losing my faith im afraid. I still have some belief in God, and its not like im living through rough times or anything. It's just that as i grow older i realise how much propaganda was shoved into my head as a child, we were MADE to believe in God and Jesus(this guy is a bit more of a mystery...at least he was human). We had no choice in the matter, we sang nursery ryhmes about Him and christianity from a very early age. It's all i know, and shaking that is somewhat hard, and i will probably continue to have some belief in God our Christian God for the rest of my life.
The same goes for other religions, whilst they may seem sily to us, it will have been forced into young childrens heads from the minute they were born. Their religion will have been around them all their life, the religions ideas seem idealistic in their vision, and people not understanding them absurd.

Religion and Morals often also get intertwined, something wish i did not wish happened. In my life I do not wish to follow a religion, i merely want to be as gooder person as i can possibly be. My morals are suprisingly high, and I hope by contining to do what I believe is "good" I will be remembered as a good person. I don't know what comes in death....maybe nothing....maybe heaven...heck maybe reincarnation....i really dont know. But hopefully leading a life that i consider to be as good as i possibly can, i will be remembered as that good person.
