No offence, but when a post starts stating that science is 150 years old, I'm not going to waste my time reading the rest.

:fp:

Ah, who am I kidding, of course I read it.

At least Carlos has left behind creationism and settled for awkward, ill-fitting shoe-horning of religious ideas into proper scientific frameworks. It's a step forward, I suppose.

Yes, but if you're suggesting BOOBYD meant something that philosophical, then you've clearly never read one of his posts.

Why do you call it "ill-fitting shoe-horning of religious ideas into proper scientific frameworks"? I think you'll find that the majority of Christians don't take everything in the bible literally. And who's to say what the 'proper' way of looking at a religion is.

For some people, religion is more a source of inspiration then a fixed set of rules.

You just made this up didn't you? If you didn't, how do you know God is a spiritual being? How did you draw this conclusion?

As I said earlier, as soon as man starts hypothesising as to what god is then it invalidates their arguement, as it is just their point of view, which is constructed on vapours, lies, rumours, chinese whispers and their own culture/society.

I think the majority do not speak out leaving only the crackpots to voice their opinions. Thus we have an american population that apparently has a 50% creationism belief (compared to 2% of scientists) and celebrity atheists like Richard Dawkins who seem to love lording it over anyone they disagree with and make it their lifes work to call everyone who believes in a God of some sort Dilusional.

Most Atheists surely just quietly let religions get on with it so long as they dont hurt them and vice-versa.

Creationism is a political belief, not a scientific one created to gain media exposure for the church and ultimately more non-thinking gullible people and ultimately more money. Never was a creationism belief examined by science before the mass public. I love how the american courts recently threw out a case of a mormon couple sueing a school for not allowing creationism to be taught in school. The courts saw creationism as a religious belief, and not an exact science and therefore unconstitutional to teach in the classroom!

Aye, it is just my hypothesis:

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him

I interpret this to mean that God gave a bunch of cave-dwelling tree beasts a soul and this in turn gave him spirituality and the power to go to the afterlife when he dies and also sentience to question his existence and be curious about the universe he inhabits. It is not only arrogant to think God looks like us but also a bit stupid. God doesnt look like a man, man gets his image from the creatures he evolved from.

Its a personal belief and nothing more.

I went for around 17 years not believing in anything like a God until I began Philosophy. I dont believe in the Christian bible..etc.. but I believe in some sort of God/Creator/Diety.

I guess I cant comprehend that we were just created by chance, by science there must be a purpose of life..etc.. And it must be a creator. But then again this leads to more problems.

But meh theres something, even if its "Powers That Be".

It does if you accept that life itself is merely the result of a set of accidents, that eventually happened coincidentally.

Unfortunately, it makes absolutely perfect sense. I think it's more a case of you not wanting to accept it, rather that being unable to.

I dont see how believing that some purpose to life or something that created us makes less sense than the scientific more realistic view of the "big bang"

Again, fact does not equal 100% certainty. Only what is observable to the point that it can be concluded that it is truth beyond a reasonable doubt. Drop a ball, and it can be concluded that it will fall. Doesn't mean that it definitely won't fall up.

I also find it hard to believe that the idea of a creator is anymore outlandish that the idea that everything just... Happened. I suppose you could argue this with the idea that with an unlimited amount of potential universes, at least one would be capable of sustaining life...

The root problem with Christianity is that their god is supposed to be all powerful and benevolent. It sounds like an easy sell but when life turns completely to gooseberry fool you have to come up with all kinds of whacked out reasons for why kindly old Jehovah saw fit to run over little Timmy with a combine harvester and leave him in a state of vegetative, limbless agony for 18 years.

Ha, probably didn't explain that to well. Probably going off on a tangent anyway, but it was in response to Anung wanting 'cold, hard fact'. It was simply to say that fact ≠ certainty. Drop a ball, and it has been observed that it will fall. It has been observed so much, that it is considered 'fact'. So, we can say that, drop a ball and it will fall. That is all fact is; continued observation of a reaction to the point that it can be considered truth beyond reasonable doubt. That's why gravity is both fact and theory.

So yeah, we have seen the ball fall so much we conclude it as fact. Doesn't mean that it is impossible that the ball won't fall blah blah blah...

Ignore me, it's bollocks anyway... Jews should stick to maths and making money.

IMO the problem of evil destroys any good arguments for an all loving all powerful God that interevenes in the world.
