The fact that whole thing is a Cinco de Quatro joke took me about 48 hours to get.

I've started re-watching from season 1 to prepare for the arrival of 5. It's nice to go back to the start and remember just how great it actually was, particularly the first two seasons.

And because now there aren't individual story lines, each episode has to repeat itself.

I am yet to watch the remix. Looking forward to it, although as per 99% of the fanbase, think it was poor by AD standards.

I mentioned this before but I could have forgiven it the lack of funny if it had carried over the spirit of the original series. But where they were affectionate and lighthearted, season 4 was mean and callous. It was just...nasty. Almost every plot revolved around the characters doing something irredeemable: Michael being an absolute dick to his son, Lindsay being a genuinely abusive parent and spouse, Tobias becoming a drug-addict, George Snr almost killing his brother and Jobe getting involved in date rape. It was actually depressing to watch.

Did the first three episodes of the remix last night. It's definitely a bit disjointed, but it was still making me laugh quite a lot, which is, I guess, what matters.

Whilst I would agree that there is definitely more of a hard edge to things in S4 - the Bluth's have always been pretty blatant about how shitty they are to each other. For example Lindsay and Tobias were dicks to Maeby right from the start - forgetting she even existed most of the time, and Lucille is constantly abusive towards her children - Lindsay in particular being emotionally put down at every opportunity, and even in S1 she crashes her car and gives Michael concussion (and then continues to hit him on the head after the fact) all because of her own selfishness.

There's clearly just a delicate balance about the way these things are handled that collapsed a bit during S4!

Yeah, it was always cruel but it an almost slapstick way. There were bits in 4 that were borderline disturbing, like Tobias' weird obsession with a poor junkie who just wants to be left alone, and Lindsay constantly debasing herself with a weird homeless guy. You're right in that, out of context, some bits from the first 3 could be seen as just as bad, but the way they were done here was just...weird.

Also, Michael straight up becomes a pathetic maggot of a man for some reason.

I think S4 lacked nuance in the same way that S10+ of The Simpsons does. Homer was always a shitty dad, but he was (in some hard-to-define way) a lovably shitty dad in the early seasons - probably in part because he had occasional moments of introspection - rather than the uniformly hateful oaf he became in the latter seasons.

I watched the first couple of episodes of S4.5 and it's certainly funnier, but still has the core problem of the characters being a lot less likeable.

I could take Michael becoming a maggot as a result of a lifetime of dealing with the rest of his terrible family - but even then I don't think they handled that very well, it could be a goldmine for humour if they took advantage of it right.

I know it's always been Mitch Hurwitz who is the driving force behind the show, but does anyone know how consistent the group of writers has been between S1-3 and S4/5?

The Simpsons comparison is an interesting one Karl, I think there is some similarity to what happened there - although after 200 odd episodes it's more forgivable that standards slipped than it is in the case of AD. Again I think most people agree that the slow exodus of writing talent is one of the things that did the Simpsons in - I do wonder whether its a similar situation here, I can't imagine they got back all the same writers when S4 returned.

It's a horrible soundclip, and that whole section of the interview is pretty, pretty scummy.

Not a good start.

That's awful - None of the men come out well, but Bateman and Cross in particular come out very badly. Was directed here to follow the reaction

BATEMAN: Again, not to belittle it or excuse it or anything...

NARRATOR: He was.

Ugh - not a fun read. Tambour sounds like a complete dick.

And what is going on where reasonably intelligent adults can't see that they just need to get on board with the fact that this kind of behaviour is not acceptable and can't be "defended" as the men (and Bateman in particular) seem to be doing here. Will Arnett is probably the only one who gets out of that alive - at least from the transcript he doesn't appear to say anything anywhere near as bad as the others.

Bateman has apologised:
Based on listening to the NYT interview and hearing people’s thoughts online, I realize that I was wrong here.

I sound like I’m condoning yelling at work. I do not. It sounds like I’m excusing Jeffery. I do not. It sounds like I’m insensitive to Jessica. I am not. In fact, I’m horrified that I wasn’t more aware of how this incident affected her.

I was so eager to let Jeffrey know that he was supported in his attempt to learn, grow and apologize that I completely underestimated the feelings of the victim, another person I deeply love - and she was sitting right there! I’m incredibly embarrassed and deeply sorry to have done that to Jessica. This is a big learning moment for me.

I shouldn’t have tried so hard to mansplain, or fix a fight, or make everything okay. I should’ve focused more on what the most important part of it all is - there’s never any excuse for abuse, in any form, from any gender. And, the victim’s voice needs to be heard and respected. Period.

I didn’t say that and instead said a bunch of other stuff and not very well.

I deeply, and sincerely, apologize.

So has anyone started watching yet? I'm trying to finish the series 4 remix first - almost done with that now, only a couple of eps to go. From a brief scan of Twitter I can see some people are saying this is a step up, which is encouraging.

I watched the first episode and it seemed a complete match for the tone and off-vibe of season 4. Got two decent laughs, but I'm not exactly bowled over so far. Too early to judge properly after one episode though.

In saying that, it always astounds me how amazing season 1 is right off the bat. After every re-watch I always assume it'll be a few episodes before it hits its stride, and I'm always surprised how wrong I am, and how instantly funny it is.

I watched five episodes and season 4 was better than this. It just feels aimless.
