I don't get people who claim they can't cook.

You basically take ingredients and apply heat until they're not longer dangerous to eat.

All true. Which basically means ASDA should have been more astute with their advertising. Saying 'behind every Christmas is a mum' is stupid but saying 'behind every Christmas is a nondescript person of no specific gender or relation' is just silly, so they should have come up with something different altogether. Something good.

Who gives a gooseberry fool? It's hardly likely that any man is going to go, "OMG ASDA SAID MUMS DO EVERYTHING SO I'LL DO NOTHING." This ad is cleverly targeted. Women do the vast majority of weekly food shops (sorry guys, but they do), so a commercial where they do everything taps into the "yeah, I bloody do!" feeling, no matter how true or not it is, and encourages them to shop at Asda cos Asda "understands" them, or whatever cod-psychology bullshit you want to assign to it.

It is mostly Mom who does all the Xmas cooking in our house but we do chip in a bit here and there when she lets us, Ill knock up the gravy, brother does some of the veg, Dad does the Dad thing and carves the turkey. Still, who gives a gooseberry fool what an ad portrays, you dont like it then laugh at their stupidity and dont shop there.

Targeted, sure. Not cleverly - hence the backlash.

It's not sexism, really, is it? It's just a generalisation. And, well, a lot of women do do that stuff. I mean, I know a lot of families that don't necessarily confirm to traditional gender roles, but at Christmas perhaps more than other times you do tend to find that some women will take on that kind of role as shown in the advert. I don't think it's suggesting that men can't or don't help. And 'offensive'? Really? There are much worse things to get properly angry about.

Its not supposed to be a hard hitting incisive view on the state of gender roles in todays society. Its supposed to be a nod to the mums who do this stuff and more than likely shop at the supermarket in the hope of inciting more of their custom. And it'll probably work, because unlike our most valiant of white knights, 'mums' dont really give a gooseberry fool.

I'd say the vast majority of customers who shop in ASDA tend to be mums feeding the family, certainly from my experience that is the case (I used to work there). I'm pretty sure ASDA could even come up with statistics to prove it.

I don't know how anyone could think that advert is sexist. Nobody complained when there was that insurance company doing the rounds purely for women drivers, or that Sheila's wheels ad.

That's really not the point. If 75% of a country happened to be green and 25% blue, an advert that said 'behind every Christmas is a green person' would be clumsy and poorly considered, regardless of whether the green people are in the majority. You could quite rightly question why someone would bother getting offended by something as trivial as this, but I don't see how you can think the advert is well considered. If it was, there wouldn't be any backlash, would there?

"Mums go to Iceland" must be the most offensive advert of all time then! :lol:
