I'm not taking the blame for either of those. They both needed to do a lot better.

Not sure who to blame for all of England’s reviews being used up already. You’re probably off the hook for that one.

We best hope Jonny goes big, as otherwise we'll likely be giving India a sniff which just shouldn't be happening.

Would make the series more interesting though!

I know, I know, I’m a terrible England fan.

JB. :(

Chuffed for Woakes though, what a good cricketer he has become since he came back onto the scene in 2016.

I'd probably rest Broad and tell him go home and practice. I'd give Woakes the new ball with Jimmy.

I think you’ve probably come up with the best solution there! My response was one of slow realisation, that yes, although Broad could probably pull a moment out of the hat somewhere down the line (as he’s been known to do), replacing him with an all-rounder is a viable move. In fact I’ve seen Porter/Woakes as the long-term replacement for Broaderson for a while, so I’m even a little annoyed that I didn’t pick up on that!

I guess I’d fallen into the same trap as the selectors, of assuming the opening pair are irreplaceable. That said, would you play this hypothesised line-up abroad as well?

Oh I see! Erm... our next tour overseas is Sri Lanka, correct? Obviously the lineup would have to change. I would go with (and I'll do Jennings a solid and assume he comes good this series):

Cook, Jennings, Root, Pope, Bairstow, Stokes, Moeen, Curran, Rashid, Leach, Anderson.

I would also take Amar Virdi from Surrey on this tour, not to necessarily play him but just for the experience. But if one of Rashid or Moeen are getting slaughtered I'd have no hesitation in throwing him in. Also, this is on the basis that Leach's form picks up.

I include Curran because he's a left-arm option and some left-arm seamers have done well in Sri Lanka (Chaminda Vaas), also Curran's old team mate and all-round legend, Kumar Sangakarra, reckons Curran could be a success overseas. Sanga is a smarter man than I, so Curran gets the nod.

I omitted Buttler because frankly I think he is quite a poor player of spin in test conditions. I don't know how Pope would dare but the rest of that batting lineup is very strong vs. spin (or at least they were in India, we could just never bowl India out for low totals). The pitches in SL will be like minefields, loads of games over there are done in 3 days now, just look at the recent SA series.

Best of luck and enjoy!

Obviously you’d change everything for the next tour (and three spinners spinning different ways is a good shout), but I’m thinking even on a hypothetical tour to somewhere where seamers are king, Woakes has a lousy average away from home. England don’t have any out-and-out speedsters, and Woakes is fairly nippy, but I’m not sure if I’d play him over Broad in Australia, say.

I think he just wanted to put India back out in the field for 30 minutes to grind them down a little more.

If our next tour was to Australia then I would look for a couple of bowlers that are McGrath like. Not particularly fast, but able to nail top of off-stump like a metronome and wobble it a bit. Porter could be capable of that (although obviously not to McGrath's degree of accuracy or skill). I would not take someone like Curran to Australia.

I believe the fastest bowler in county that could make the grade is Jamie Overton (not to be confused with brother Craig who DID go down under) so I might take him, given the kookaburra gains speed off the hard pitches in Aus, Overton could very well get up to 90mph. I'd definitely take Rashid as well given their well documented struggles against spin of all varieties.

So my bowling line up to go to Australia right now would be Stokes, Anderson, Rashid, Porter, Overton.

To me Broad has been a passenger in the team for about 18 months now (cue an 8/15-esque demolition).
