Yes! Burns at 3, possibly for Malan... which is a shame, because I really liked Malan, but after the Ashes he just seems to have fallen away a bit. He averaged 38 for Middlesex, it's probably not too surprising.

This is essentially my line-up! Except I don't feel Woakes does enough different to Broaderson to warrant picking as well. (Or Stokes for that matter.) He's a slightly faster rfm, and I'd rather have someone with extra pace, bounce, or leftiness in the squad.

Jake Ball gets nowhere near it.

Definitely. To be fair to the Chef, he's actually been in relatively good form since the County season started. Including the Pakistan tests, he's scored 84, 0, 27, 36, 66, 70, 1, 46, 58, 9, 11, 33, 0 and 96.

Rory Burns is making another compelling case for selection. Dawid Malan... isn't.

Just checked out Burns's stats over the last few years.

2014 - 950 runs @ 39.58, 2x100, 4x50
2015 - 1,019 runs @ 48.52, 2x100, 5x50
2016 - 1,144 runs @ 40.85, 2x100, 7x50
2017 - 1,041 runs @ 49.57, 1x100, 8x50
2018 - 722 runs @ 65.63, 2x100, 3x50

First two seasons there were in Div 2, mind, but it's clear he's been one of the most consistent openers on the county scene for a while.

So we still suck at playing spin. Christ knows what Root and Bairstow were doing after seeing a) Morgan not get to the pitch of the ball, and b) the sheer bounce that Kuldeep was getting. Brainfades.

That said, Root has really fallen away across all formats recently. Can’t possibly drop him, not in the longer formats anyway, but dear Bradman this fallow patch has gone on long enough.

Hopefully he'll get back to his best in the most glorious of formats... Tbh, it's not like India's quicks really flustered him in India, over there they only got him out twice. His other 8 dismissals were by one of Ashwin, Jadeja, Mishra or Jayant Yadav. Pitches here won't be spinning anything like those in the sub-continent

Bumruh is coming back from an injury, Bhuvi is good, Umesh is quite average, Ishant Sharma might cause some worries and I'm unsure if Shami will even make the tour. It should be a good series for our batsmen because India's quicks won't take full advantage of English conditions, much like our spinners sucked in India.

I can totally see Chef grinding out a century on the first day of the series at Edgbaston, especially seeing as he is going to get an early look at the Indian bowling unit when they play Essex at Chelmsford the week before.

You realise that now you've said that there's no way Cook will score a fifty all series?

But hopefully yes. Although I think Umesh Yadav's in form, sadly.
